I had a funny thing happen to me a few days ago that the Alabama fans may find interesting.

I work as a private security contractor and I am currently in southern Afghanistan working on a contract. On this particular day I was dealing with some local national Afghans. There was about 12 of them milling around waiting for some things to happen so they could move on. I was watching the group and noticed something.

It is not uncommon to find an Afghan wearing an American sports team hat or t-shirt. Usually, it is a gift from an American service member or it is in clothing given out by charities. So I was quite interested when I saw an Afghan in the group wearing an Alabama sweater. I went up to the the group, who were involved in their own conversation in their language, Pashtu, and had my interpreter call the man over. The Afghan came up to me and I stared at the sweater for a second and then pointed to the Alabama "A" on the left chest of the sweater, saying to him "Alabama".

This Afghan, who did not speak a bit of English, looked at me, smiled, then said, "ROLL TIDE!"

I was stunned for a second then smiled back at him.

Then I did what any self respecting SCAR Gamecock alumni and fan would do in this situation...hell, what any SEC East team fan would do...I immediately classified him as "Suspected Taliban", notified Special Forces and the intel section to come and interrogate him, suggesting they break out the waterboard.

As much as I hate it, it's a Crimson Tide world...
