Melissa Runyon hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead, after winning a 2-0 game earlier on a one-hitter by Osario. Just when it looked like there was no chance, we pull off the miracle.

Now up - Michigan

My bad - I was trying to get it off of the announcers :)

Marisa Runyon hit the grand slam, and Alexis Osorio pitched the one hitter in game 2.

I don't watch much softball. How hard is it to hit a home run (I assume it wasn't inside-the-park if they stretched it into a grand slam) in softball? Are the fences closer? Am I underestimating how far someone can hit a big ol' softball?

Pretty hard. While the pitches are not as fast as baseball, the distance to the plate is much closer (40 feet as opposed to 60 ft, 6 in). That said, your power hitters in a collegiate softball season will have more home runs than your baseball power hitters at the top of the pack, and averages will be higher. That's why true softball aces are hard to come by, and end up playing a LOT more games. The leader in starts in the SEC had 43; in baseball, the leader had 16. Wilkinson played in 48 of UGA's 59 games.

The fences are closer. A little too close I believe. I have seen some of the bigger girls hit pop ups that carry out of those fields. And I watch a lot of softball.

I think they're a little too close also... AU hitter hit an opposite field HR today that I thought was gonna be a pop out..

Thanks. I just looked it up and, surprisingly, softballs apparently tend to have a lower drag coefficient than baseball. They gave the numbers, but it seems completely counter-intuitive to me. But numbers don't lie, I guess.

Yea and you also see balls that clear the fence by 40-50+ feet. I think they could move them back a little and still see plenty of homers.

Cal had a big girl a few years ago that used to hit 300-400ft bombs that would bounce off of busses and cars in the parking lot. She was too big to run much but she could really bomb it out of the park.

I would say really easy since you have girls with 20 homeruns. You just have to get solid contact and the short distance to the wall will turn a routine fly into a homerun. I'm glad the field is short. It makes girls softball somewhat watchable.

the same logic behind closer tees in w golf, lowering the net in Volleyball, so there's more spikes.... and why women's bball should lower the basket. The result is a usually a more watchable sport.
