It's time to dive into another season of college football and prospect-watching. Since my first 2017 Big Board after the draft, there are several new additions. One common theme, though? S-E-C. College football's most storied conference leads the way with almost half of my top 25. Alabama, last year's national champion, has a huge presence, and several of their biggest names are seniors, a rarity in today's evaluation process. Clemson, last year's runners-up, has a presence, too. Let's get to it.
A reminder: General scouting reports on these players won't change week to week, unless my overall evaluation changes. I'll simply be updating performance notes and providing updates on key matchups to come.

1. Tim Williams, OLB, Alabama
Outside of quarterback, there is no greater premium position in the modern NFL than a premium pass-rusher, and Williams can be simply unblockable. He had 10.5 sacks even though he played only about 20 percent of defensive snaps. And that's just the challenge: Does he play the run well, and will he be dominant when he stays on the field more? If not, he'll drop.

Sounds like 2017 will be a historically weak draft then

So I guess he will be a DE in the NFL? A LB hasn't been taken #1 overall in a long time.

Pump the breaks Mel. Let's see if he can be more of an every down down guy first.

Love me some Tim Williams. Dude is relentless and violent.

i know he was a beast when he did, but how much did he play last year?

These guys are evaluated as "edge players" now and not really pigeonholed into a postion. The game is evolving and every defense is multiple. Nickel has become the base defense

Tim William's explosion reminds me a little bit of Derrick Thomas. Dudes fast as shite.

Trying to figure out where we draw the line with this argument.
On one hand, he was "fresher" and really got to pin his ears back when he was in the game.
On the other hand, he was on the bench for a ton of quarterback drop backs last season and still racked up 10.5 sacks. I think the takeaway from that is that he has elite pass rushing ability. His first step is unmatched in college football

He is great but lets watch for an entire season before anointing him the #1 pick in the country first.

Love the high praise from Kiper for our boy, but I'm not sure about #1. That would be unreal.

His big board isn't a mock draft.
Just how he ranks the best players.
A QB, DE of OT is most likely to be taken 1 this year.
My bet is Watson to Cleveland.

Myles Garrett seems to be a more complete pass rusher at this point but this season will tell the tale.

Pretty impressive to be top 5 in the conference in sacks while missing 80% of the teams defensive snaps

This SDS article says 178 snaps. That's obviously fairly low for a guy getting the kind of hype he is.
LINK
This PFF articles says he was easily the most efficient pass rusher in the country. Obviously some of that can be contributed to being put in great pass rushing situations, but it is clear he is a lethal pass rusher.
LINK
If he can double his snaps and keep up the productivity and efficiency then he probably could be the top non-QB pick in the draft. That's yet to be seen though.

I wonder how many of those 178 were passing plays

PFF indicates 148 pass rushing attempts totaling 52 pressures (i.e., 11 sacks, 8 hits, 33 hurries)
52 total pressures on 148 attempts is a pressure once every 2.8 attempts. That's an insane number.

Thing is, Garrett sees MUCH more time on the field. As for quick first step, if you allowed Garrett to sit on the sidelines and just pin his ears back 20% of the time, he'd be unblockable as well.
