I probably should have placed in the thread title the question was for the older guys like Crisp and a few others.

I went to this game in New Orleans, but remember just bits and pieces of the game. Yesterday I viewed some video clips from the game and had a couple of questions for you guys:

1. I don't remember it raining for the game, but in some clips you can see water on the field when tackles are made. Did it rain during the game as I don't remember this.

2. The Alabama punter got off an awesome punt down to the Notre Dame 4-5 yard line at the end of the game. On the play, the Alabama punter was roughed with a personal foul called against Notre Dame. Coach Bryant declined the penalty.

Did he decline because the punt had the Irish back inside their 5 yard line? I think if he had taken the penalty, Alabama would have had the ball 1st and 10 around the 50.

3. Did Alabama play a two QB system that season with Rutledge and Todd? The kid that threw the TD pass to Todd was also a QB - Mike Stock. I don't remember much about him, did he ever play a significant amount of time as a QB for Alabama?

4. Wilbur Jackson - did he start his career as a wide receiver? I am questioning because he wore #80

Yes.

He was defensive-minded, and came from the days of the quick kick on third down, so probably. I have never read his side of the story.

Yes. Stock was a running back who never played much quarterback after high school.

To my knowledge, no. He was recruited as and starred as a running back only.

But I could be wrong.

I actually watched this game on YouTube in its entirety recently and can answer your questions even though I was not alive.

1. It rained in the lead up to the game but had quit by kickoff.

2. A risk Bryant took that didn't pay off. The game was a battle of field position at that point and Bryant was trying to gain the upper hand in that department.

3. No. The two main QBs in 1973 were Gary Rutledge and Richard Todd.

4. No. He was always a HB in the wishbone offense.

Thanks RollTide1987 for the responses.

It is wild looking back at the game film as there are some really dumb errors during the game that leave you scratching your head. The two that stand out at the end of the game are the roughing the punter by Notre Dame and then Casper jumping off-sides on the third down play at the end of the game. Probably the roughing the punter though....I was smiling thinking what in the hell is that guy thinking doing that? He would do that today and that crazy guy they have coaching the Irish these days would have had a coronary on the sideline

No. We had lost yardage on that series and punted on something like 4th and 20, and in 1973 the roughing the punter did not result in an automatic 1st down. We still would have had 4th and around 5 yards to go.

Yes, lots of rain days before kickoff. Not that much during the game itself.

Would not have been a first down in 1973.

Bryant always played multiple qbs in the wishbone.

4. Wilbur Jackson - did he start his career as a wide receiver? I am questioning because he wore #80

Yes

I was at this game...we rented a Winnabego and drove to New Orleans from Tuscaloosa - parked in Audubon park. It was cold and light-rain, misting for most of the first half... it definitely was damn wet, which is why they make whiskey.

The 4th Q punt pinned ND back and it looked like a good play until third down when ND completed a surprise long pass for a first down and ran out the clock. Alabama secondary were fooled and it cost the game.

My memory is that Wilber Jackson was always a running back though listed as receiver. And he was the first black scholarship player recruited as a freshman He was the rookie of the year the next year in the NFL and one of the best that played at Alabama. HOWEVER... he only ran the ball like 7 times in the ND game (and had remarkably few carries for the year. I think he only carried the ball like 200 times in his entire career at Alabama).

Why? Coach Bryant ran 6-8 different running backs in every game in 1972 and ran the two QB system. (Todd was the better athlete but not smart, Rutledge was more polished.) In 1972, I think Coach for maybe the only time tried to give all his great players playing time instead of settling on the best. Before that, Bryant pretty much had Terry Louisiana Davis at QB.. don't think he played other QBs that much, but did spell Davis.

Alabama probably should have won that ND game. A couple of returns helped ND stay in the game. In any case, The NC in 2013 expunged a lot of ghosts... and I still love to watch Eddie Louisiana Lacy run over the Irish.

Oh... after the 1973 game as we were leaving the stadium P.O'd, I ripped a ND button off of a 50 year old who waved a ND shaker in my face, and I still have it.

Later I sucker punched a pimply faced punk wearing a ND cap in front of eight of his buddies on the Street Car late a night when it stopped to let me off. Pimply face had said very loudly "have you ever seen so many cheap southern whores in all your life?" while the car was going down St. Charles... so I waited till the car stopped, whacked him and got off. When his shocked buddies didn't follow, I ran along beside the street car beating on the side of the car, calling them out. I'm not proud of it... but no damnyankee was going to criticize our cheap southern whores.

Ooopppps... that is a lie... I AM proud of it. Frik ND

It was a good ballgame. Bama did not move the ball at all in the first quarter and I always thought that should have been Richard Todd's game, Rutledge was a liability in this one.

The killer was the kickoff return for a TD by Notre Dame, you cannot give up things like that in a game of this caliber, just ask Clemson.

Yes it did, but the 1986 ND game helped too. Although the shite stomping in Miami was a joy for this old lady to behold.

Others are correct. The roughing the punter penalty would have still had us short of a 1st down.

So you're the pussy arse bastard that blindsided me and ran like a bitch? Why not face me man to man?

PS: All these years later, I've yet to see as many southern whores as I did on that glorious 1973 day!

I was 11 and cried after the Game.

I was under the impression that the penalty wouldn't have given Bama a 1st down.I may be wrong.

A 3rd and long pass out of the end zone to the TE sealed the Game for Notre Dame.

Bear never beat Ara Parsegian(sp).

Enjoy hearing other's remembrances of these games, wins or losses. I recall the 1967 Alabama win 7-6 for meeting Coach Bryant and also at the end of the game LSU lined up for a field goal and I asked my dad how can he kick a FG when he cannot kick the extra point. Some lady started eating my young butt for questioning a player's abilities, figured after all these years it was the kicker's mom....lol

Unsure what you want me to bring up? I was at the 2011 game in Tuscaloosa just like many other LSU-Alabama games. The game was a tough defensive struggle with the Bama FG kicker having a tough time. LSU had a few opportunities and made the plays when they had to and ended up winning 9-6 in overtime. The main thing I recall is walking out the stadium and everyone being totally drained, just like a bunch of zombies milling about.

A really serious question as your answer will determine if I respond any longer to your posts: Did you ever attend school? No worries about not graduating high school or anything major like that, but did you ever at least sit in a classroom?

Why do you always have to be so combative and negative.

I see you joined about the time Wooly Al went away. This is not Wooly AL

He/she is a gate crasher from Wooly AL.
As a Bama fan, I apologize
Hopefully a ban will be in order soon

Bama54 --- I am beginning to feel bad for the guy, cannot get out of his own way. I think he wanted to ask me about the 2012 fiasco. Hell, that was not a fiasco, that was an arse whipping
