Aggy, are you worried about your offense at all?

Before someone makes a comment about LSU fans making A&M threads, don't flatter yourselves your game was just the first meaningful week 1 game I have had a chance to watch so far. Even still only watched first 3 quarters.

But anyway, on to the topic. For serious discussion, not trolls.

After watching most of your game, I came away expecting more from the offense. I was really expecting this game to be a shootout with the offenses going back and forth, but it was far from that. I liked the matchup with your offense vs ASU defense because I am used to seeing A&M put up a ton of yards/points against teams that are not used to that style of offense. Not to mention the fact that A&Ms WR are very good while the ASU DBs are very suspect.

In the past, when I have watched Sumlin's offense against an aggressive defense like ASU's blitzing, the offense would turn into a 5wr sets with quick slants, outs, and hitches. I remember vividly the LSU game in 2012 when A&M scored with ease their first 2 drives because LSU kept sending pressure, but JFF would throw the ball well before any pressure could get to him. It wasn't until after we put 8 in coverage and rushed 3 that the defense turned things around. Was it just me or did the offense not do much of this in the first half at all? Seems like it would have been successful against the ASU blitz.

I realize A&M ended with 38 points and over 400 yards, but I don't think those stats tell the whole picture. You had 7 points from special teams, and 7 from a 15 yard drive. Against ASU, A&M had 16 legit drives. Against LSU last year A&M had 10 drives, vs Arkansas you had 13, Bama you had 12. Does it worry you that your offense wasn't more efficient, especially in the first half? If ASU was smart enough to slow the game down more then the game could have been closer.

Also, thoughts on your running game? There was clearly more of an emphasis to run the ball, but the efficiency wasn't there.

Slightly worried, but we have 4 cupcakes to work it out before we have to play Bama.

In what sense do you imagine a Pac-12 team is "not used" to our style of offense

The OL is definitely a concern, though I expect to improve as they play more together and mesh. A lot of people are pissed about the play calling and we were pretty vanilla with what we did. Why that is, I don't know. I'm not sure if it was a first game thing, because they were concerned about the OL, or what. I don't really agree on the part about ASU not being used to our offense though. shite they run an offense very similar to ours

We talked all offseason about running the ball more and it looks like we meant it. Once James White (left after his second carry) gets healthy it should help the depth at RB and hopefully the line has meshed by then. It will also let us run some of the two back sets that we saw in scrimmages and early on vs ASU which is a new wrinkle we didn't use much in the past. I want to see Murray with these guys running some read option

Overall I trust us to improve on offense as the season goes on based on our track record. There were certainly positives- Allen looked better as the game went along, Kirk is a serious playmaker, Reynolds looked like himself, Carson got some tough yards even though it wasn't always pretty, and Murray adds a whole new wrinkle for defenses to prepare for

Plus it looks like we don't need to put up 45 points every game to have a chance to win

I'll bite on your allegely non-trolling thread, even though you used "Aggy" in the title.

ASU's defese was extremely aggressive. Every play featured a blitz from some direction. They did a good job of disguising packages. The QB play was a bit rusty and our OC had some shitty play calling. The run game was stuffed because ASU focused on it. ASU DBs were in man cover all game long to allow for a blitz on every play. Our offense was better. Our defense was better. Aggies defense is different this year. If anyone plays us and can't pass the ball, they will lose.

We need to improve. Every team does.

We faced a good defense that presents unique challenges with their exotic blitz packages. It was good to be challenged like that to see where improvements can be made.

It sounds cliche perhaps, but I'm glad we came out and struggled on offense a bit.

It's better than what happened last year.. where we absolutely dominated SC and people start handing out nick names to our QB and things only get worse from there.

Now in practice we have something to get up for, coaches can point out obvious flaws that need improvement and the players don't get complacent from thinking they've already arrived.

That being said, we still scored 5 times on offense (4 touch downs) against a decent defense that plays against spread teams constantly. Nothing to panic over, imo.

sorry, there was a post about that on another thread.

While Pac12 teams definitely run more spread offenses, I don't necessarily see them as the same as a normal Sumlin style offense. The game this Saturday seemed like more of a Pac12 offense than Sumlin normally runs (2RB sets as another poster mentioned, and more spread runs). I do think A&M needs more of an emphasis on the run, but I think this game might have been the one game that they would have been better off passing more. Especially quick passes, such as the Kirk TD.

Yeah the O line needs some work and the play calling needs some work. The QB and WR need a little more time to figure out timing but that should work itself out. We had some drops but I think they go back to timing, at least I hope that's all ir was. The running game was so so but I think that had to do with the play calling and the fact that our #2 RB got dinged up, jury is still out there. I do believe that Allen was a little over amped playing in front of his home state crowd and it took him awhile to calm down but when he came back in late he showed leadership and that's never a bad thing.

Sumlin and Spavital said we went very conservative and it showed.

With our defense playing well, and their blitz every play defensive style, coupled with breaking in a new left side of the line I think it's what we all expected.

38 points ain't bad.

This! You should be our OC.

I was waiting for the quick hitters coming over the middle from the slot on a few first downs, but they never came. We didn't mix it up at all. Ran on running downs, pass on passing downs with the exception of one draw play where we got the yards needed to convert.

I'm reserving judgement to see if our play calling evolves and our O line wins a few trench battles in the next few weeks. I'm not sold on our offense yet; that being said, our skill players look above avg. to well above avg. with quite a bit of room to improve. Our offense could be really, really good. But we could also be predictable and "out physicaled"
