Anytime LSU-TAMU get in a dick measuring contest, the early to mid 90s A&M teams are always brought up. What was the story behind those guys? Outside A&M kicking LSU's arse a bunch during that time

We paid players, but we also had coaches that emphasized defense and recruited athletes with a certain edge to them. Our defenses in the early to mid 90's were spectacular and stacked with NFL talent, sucks to see what it's like now

I mean, the best defensive player in the league graduated A&M only 7 years ago

We had a bunch of NFL players on our defenses then though instead of a small handful like when we had Von or last year

John Mackovic

When he arrived A&M was putting a dent into UT's recruiting. Mackovic thought that A&M was no threat so UT began to recruit other states.
A&M and high school coaches began to tell these top high school seniors that UT didn't want Texans on their team and the people in Austin thought that some kid in California and Louisiana was better than them.
A&M began to pull in a lot more of the top Texas talent and began to actually for the first time since pre 1939 challenge UT

Mack Brown came around and RC Slocum could not keep up so A&M went back to winning 6 or 7 games a year

I wish I could've seen any forum reaction from Aggie fans to that game any bookmarks or links to that time period from another board would be highly appreciated.

Big Brother Aggie has a winning record over little bro horn since scholarship restrictions were put into place, and that even includes Mack browns decade of success

Poor horn can't explain that away

I think the results would lead you to believe it's the other way around.

Like I said A&M had put a dent into UT before John Mackovic but under Mackovic the dent started to become a hole
A lot of what Mackovic walked into was created by Jackie Sherill and his network of agents scouting Texas for talent.
Without A&M willing to pay players in the 1980's none of that would have happen. A&M begins to equal the playing field by paying players.
Mackovic should have known this but he still thinks UT can open the doors at UT and all the players will come running to Austin. Didn't happen that way.

Aggy should just appreciate their Golden Years of Football. I do not think the 1980's 1990's will ever return to Austin, Baton Rouge or College Station.
LSU returning their past glory also damaged A&M as well

Yup

'84-'94 TAMU rolled the Horns. '90 we won in Austin.. barely.

End of Akers era, MCWilliams era & front end of Mackovic era.

Texas was getting true "student athletes"/nice suburban kids.. A&M was hauling in the studs that werent going outta state to sexier programs at the time.

Mackovic didn't understand the state of Texas or even try, but a good enough X/O's guy to keep it interesting. His predessors couldn't pull in the elites unless they were UT lifers.

Brown finally put some sizzle back into the program & then it finally swung back around to Texas' way.

Horns are in the midst of some garbage years , but that 80's-90's run was worse. Talent level and commitment to winning was vacant.

Aggies had a great run, but like the Manziel era they couldn't quite capitalize on it.
