Both your coaches entered the season on the hot seat. Both could still end up canned by the end of the season with a few bad losses between now and December...

LSU has proven that the grass is not always greener on the other side. How many Tiger fans this morning are still glad they have Coach O as head coach in Baton Rouge over Les Miles?

There will always be a time to part ways with a coach... Tennessee appears to have reached that point... but Auburn and Texas A&M both sit at 4-1 right now, and appear to have teams that are in the top half of the league. While they both did it in Year 1 at their respective schools, Sumlin and Malzahn have produced teams that finished in the Top 5.

Unless there is a slam dunk option for replacing your head coach, you may be best off to make do with what you currently have.

If he loses to LSU and UGA again, no thanks.

If Auburn loses more than 3 games this year, Gus should be arrested by the FBI for point shaving.

Both of those teams will have a new HC by 2019 imo. Not saying auburn or A&M is bad just think they both have great potential and need a great HC to get them there.

I don't advocate firing is always the answer, but you ignored your own team's decision to fire one of the best coaches Uga has had for greener grass. Are we all supposed to ignore that?

Get thee hence leghumper

UCLA debacle got the AD's attention. Vetting of candidates should be underway just in case.

If Sumlin only loses to Bama and Auburn, but wins the rest of his games, then he won't be replaced.

Anything short of that and he could be gone.

To be fair running off head coaches is part of our DNA. Rationalizing it away is useless.

I don't think Sumlin is a bad coach. He has built A&M into an above average program. Without Johhny, he seems like a lock for 8 wins. He can't seem to put everything together for a big run, but he's good enough to keep us better than whoever is in the cellar of the west that year. I think it is more than worth the risk of becoming worse to try and become great. Hiring a new coach is a bit of a crapshoot, but if the powers that be do their due diligence and make an educated hire then I'll roll with the choice.

9-3 would have Sumlin back, almost certainly. The reason I say "almost" is because, if he is not given an extension, Sumlin would go into 2018 with only two years left on his contract (2018 and 2019). It's unusual for a coach at a big time program to have such a short amount of time on his contract (creates a talking point for negative recruiting: "You don't want to sign with A&M, Sumlin will be gone--he's only got two years left on his contract.") So, if we do decide we want to bring Sumlin back, whether that's after 9-3, 8-4, or (unlikely) after 7-5, we'd have to decide what to do about the contract. I won't go into detail on what I think could happen, but suffice it to say that we could be inclined to bring Sumlin back based upon on the field performance and still end up making a change if a deal can't be worked out on an extension (Sumlin would have to agree to a reduced buyout, at least in the extended term, in order for that to happen).

Maybe you missed the last line of the OP in which I said, "Unless you have a slam dunk option for a replacement..."

By all accounts, Kirby is going to do well at Georgia. He's at least taken the program to a better place (at the current moment). Georgia knew when we fired Richt that we had a good replacement option. Kirby played at Georgia. He had plenty of time to coach up under Nick Saban, etc.

If you know who your guy is and you know you can get him there... by all means go ahead with it. But the worst thing you can do is fire your coach (re: Less Miles), thinking you're going to land some coaching hot shot, only to have to settle for an unproven coach who had a terrible head coaching track record (re: Coach O).

Miles put us in this position by not getting any bodies on the lines. He would have lost the team last year after losses to Ole Miss and Arkansas. If not last season, he probably would still have had a losing season this year. We literally have 4 total DL. 2 of them are playing every snap. We're starting a true freshman Guard at Tackle.

We are hot garbage in disguise. That being said, Sumlin will get a 2 year extension because there is no one worth hiring and he will likely go 5-3 in SEC play with a bunch of freshman. Am I happy about it? Not really. Am I upset? Also not really. He is playing in 2018/2019 while everyone else plays in 2017.

You had no idea Kirby was or is a slam dunk.

Btw, I don't disagree with some of your points in the rest of the post.

LSU Alleva screwed up the whole coaching deal. It doesn't make the fans wrong for wanting the change. That was your original message in the OP and I disagree with it. You have since added some info to clarify some of your position, but the LSU fans were justified as the Uga fans to call for change. Their leadership got it wrong.

I assume you are referring to SEC schools in general, not AU.

AU has 'run off' exactly four HCs in the past 65 seasons. Final season SEC records of each HC were 0-6, 1-7, 2-6 and 0-8.

If either team wants him, we will loan Bert out indefinitely.

I am. Orgeron will be gone within 2 or 3 years. We didn't get rid of Miles fast enough. The lack of talent and depth on the lines is a direct result of Miles' shitty recruiting in his last few years here.

Lsu is a premier job. However, when you fire someone that gives you 9-10 wins a year, who wants to get in line to be next one canned? Coaching is a fraternity and if you don't think these guys and their agents talk amongst themselves, well, you're kidding yourself. Lsu will go through another coach after O before the fans expectations get low enough for a big name to come in. You Reap what what you sow.

You should've taken your own advice. Firing Richt for Skirby will not end well.

A warning to Georgia fans -

You think your coach is awesome but it's only year two. You might want to give it more time before you call it a roaring success that you canned mark richt.

Signed,

Gene Chizik and Larry Coker.
