This article from Vail's local paper insinuates that dealing with banks is still not viable.

May I ask where you've seen a change in policy? I'm legitimately interested.
They were still dealing in cash in Telluride a couple of weeks a ago when I was there.

We smoked 'em up for a week on the slopes and had a fine time.

actually think this is pretty funny. Much better than 90% of the other threads.

It is, but NYC has a terrible sense of humor.

Unless the feds changed their policy, I don't see how any bank that operates in multiple states would be willing to take the risk. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, though.

No idea if they changed their policy, but a good regional bank can work just fine. I still have an account with a regional bank in Michigan, even though I haven't lived there in two years, because they are an excellent bank and far more trustworthy than any of the multinationals.

I'll call up my USAA hotline and ask the kind folks if they'd be willing to take my drug money.

Pharmaceuticals, man. You gotta know the right word. Drug money is "pharmaceutical dividends." Murder for hire money is "human inventory depreciation." Pimp money is "profits from selling crack."

Huh. I never noticed that last one could be a problem even with the euphemism. My bank must be very understanding.

Regional banks are insured by the FDIC, right?

I mean I have a little independent/local bank right down the street - they are insured by the FDIC and they only have 3 little branches in my area.

Which is a point, but it does depend on what they can yank the FDIC coverage for. Taking money from quasi-illegal enterprises might be a situational issue, especially if the feds are winding down aggressive enforcement. But we're talking about a state government depositing tax money. It gets a lot more complicated when the overall revenue is largely completely legal. Not sure the federal government would have the guts to go after an entire state's finances like that. The response would likely be more along the lines of yanking certain types of federal money in the same way pressured the states to raise the drinking age or implement educational standards.
