I say this every year

gives every school a home & away with every other school once every 4 years.

ideally we require each team to have 2 P5 games a year & 1 "creampuff"

let's do this, let's make the SEC great again

No way we do 9 SEC games and 2 P5 games until other conferences beef up their schedules

NEVER going to happen because there is NO WAY to compare whom is better than whom without common opponents.

2 power five games is a bit much. Although it's how it should be.

However, 9 conference games, a P5 game, and no FCS games should be a thing. Other conferences are already doing this.

Mega conferences only having 8 conference games is pretty strange, especially with a permanent cross division games

Teams across divisions will go 12 years and only play teams from the other division 2 times each unless in a Championship game.

I would be OK with a 9 game SEC schedule, with your designated rival, one P5 opponent (or a substitute if your P5 opponent hoses you like Michigan did to Arkansas by backing out of the series), and two gimme games.

Shutting the door on FCS schools does seem a bit harsh though. Landing a game with an SEC team could help an FCS team's budget for a couple of years. Maybe one FCS foe every two years.

This.

Only problem with having only 3 OOC opponents would be for UF, UGA, UK and SCarolina. Having a permanent OOC on your schedule would put them at a disadvantage, only having two slots to work with.

It does nothing for the SEC or other P5 teams, however. Why should they lose money and fan interest by scheduling FCS teams?

We need 4 mega P5 conferences and 4 mega G5 conferences. Because G5 teams don't have the talent and money of the P5 schools, they should hold their own championship. The P5 schools should, too. Then the structure of college football would be set as

P5
G5
FCS
Div. 2
Div. 3

9 game conference schedule is an obvious choice. Les Miles was the most outspoken opponent of 9 games, so maybe now that he's out of the picture we can make the rational decision.

Keep it at 8, but eliminate the permanent rivalries.

And for the teams who MUST HAVE their permanent rivalries that are screwing up scheduling currently (UA/UT, AU/UGA): You can keep your games...they will just be considered "non-conference" and not factored in your SEC standing with the option to swap a win out with another cross-division loss every two years.

Clear as mud.

Why not let the teams that have to have a perm rival have it, and rotate rest

Everyone just needs to man up

OR maybe just schedule tougher P5 games when weak SEC schools like Vandy, Ole Miss, Mizzou and Arkansas roll onto the schedule

if the P5 schools break away you may see something like this. but all conferences would have to do the same thing to make all schedules equal.

After seeing it in action, I have become vehemently opposed to the 4 mega conference structure UNLESS it incorporates the pod system and the conference is really just a loose affiliation of the 4 pods. Otherwise, it gets too geographically diverse and loses its identity. Missouri is already a bad fit culturally and aTm was a bit of a stretch. I don't want us to become some gargantuan league that includes WVU, Missouri, OU and God knows what else that loses the culture and unique identity of the the SEC as southern football.

All the conferences are struggling with this reality already. The SEC has outlier Missouri, the B1G has Nebraska and Maryland and Rutgers, the ACC has Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse. The PAC has the Arizona schools and Utah and Colorado. None of these additions have really "fit" into the culture and personality of their conference. There's nothing wrong with them, it's just trying to put a square peg in a round hole in the name of money.

We should get back to the heart of what created these leagues in the first place: similar schools and fanbases in distinct regions of the country that share their culture and way of life. Let the money work itself out. And following that logic, any expansion should come from Florida up through Virginia but no further west than Arkansas. That list should include Clemson and FSU. Sorry, UF and USC, but that's the reality of the situation. They fit better than OU and Okie Lite.

Why? Just do what the Big 10 and Pac 12 have done and lock in a couple of significant cross-division rivalries and rotate the rest. It's not that hard.
