Texas A&M has a vacancy at the defensive back coach and, according to GigEm247 sources, the Aggies are set to announce Ron Cooper to the position. A formal announcement should come Thursday afternoon.
Cooper previously coached under A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis at LSU from 2009-11.
Cooper spent the 2016 season at FIU as the defensive coordinator after being promoted from defensive backs coach the previous season. Prior to that, he spent two years as defensive backs coach with South Florida and a year in the NFL with the same job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cooper has other SEC stops including the secondary coach at South Carolina from 2004-08 and the Mississippi State defensive coordinator in 2003. He has served as head coach at Eastern Michigan, Louisville and Alabama A&M, compiling a 49-58 career record at the three schools.

good hire, instant upgrade from terry joseph.
you're gonna really need to watch his expense reports on his supposed recruiting visits, though.

Who's gonna recruit on that defensive staff? Chavis doesn't, cooper pretends to but doesn't. Cooper is a great technician and on field coach just horrible recruiter

Well that isn't even true. We went 11-2 in 2012.

Every time I hear Ron Cooper's name, it reminds me of the dreadful 2003 season. His defense surrendered 39.5 points per game.

Exactly. Cooper would lie about visiting recruits. Luckily we didn't have to reach far for DB recruits while he was at LSU. Mathieu fell into his pocket.

He's the best DB coach in the country IMHO.
I've known Ron since his days at Eastern Michigan.
Great hire. Instant upgrade for the A&M Secondary.

Cooper is a genius, tbh.
He would double up on the "not really going out to recruit" angle by actually going to the home towns of these kids, racking up large tabs, and using that as proof he was there

As stated in other thread, great hire for the Aggies.
His recruiting antics got him fired. He claimed expenses on trips he never took/not talking with players he said he did and handing out scholarships to players without approval.
Coach wise, Ags secondary will certainly improve.

quote:Lol no. Corey Raymond is by far the beat DB coach in the country. Ron Cooper is a badass coach though, great hire A&M.

Cooper is a solid DB coach, obviously his stints as coordinator and head coach didn't go to well but a lot of LSU fans wanted him back when Raymond was possibly leaving the LSU staff.
