Ranking Guidelines
1. We’re looking for the best player.
2. Yes, production matters. But production was probably secondary to ...
3. Ability. Ability is a nebulous term that is defined in different ways by different people. But if you see a running back who had 800 yards last year ahead of one who had 1,200, chances are, we just thought Player A had more ability.
4. Position matters. All things being equal, take the left tackle over the guard.
quote:
Not only were players ranked from 1 through 247, but we also assigned a number to them, similar to the way we’ve evaluated recruits. This lets you know which players are in the same tier. In some cases, the drop off between two players 50 spots apart was fairly minimal. Like we do for our recruiting rankings, 32 players received a five-star designation.
For the preseason College Football Top247, we elected to leave off players who haven’t played at this level, so junior college players with no prior college experience, and freshmen, both true and redshirt, were left off the list. Will some of them wind up on the midseason and postseason version of this list? Without a doubt. But it’s hard to reward them at this point when they haven’t proven anything between the lines on an FBS field.
There’s never a pure consensus when making a list like this. Some people will have Player A higher, while others will have him lower. In some cases, there are pretty significant gaps in opinion. But the end result is a list that we think stands up to the challenge of identifying the Top 247 players in the country.

There's a lot of ambiguity there...when you inject "potential" in there. And I don't doubt that Bama has the best players in the conference but good grief. It reminds me of a line from "Catch me if you Can"
"Do you know why the Yankees always win? It's because their opponents can't stop staring at the pin stripes". -Frank Abagnale
It means basically that their reputation precedes them and works as kind of a slight of hand. It's why Shaq could bulldoze over 3 stationary defenders and jump 3 inches off the ground for a slam dunk, no foul, thunderous applause

LSU needs Kristian Fulton and Kevin Toliver to step up big time this year at CB.
Hopefully you just missed Ralph Webb.....

Is this a reference to Drew Lock? Because my guess is their response to him being left out would be that production against Eastern Michigan and Delaware State doesn't matter, only production against semi-competitive P5 competition, and Lock struggled there.
vs 1AA teams (Delaware State)
26/36 (72%)
402 yards (402 YPG)
11.2 YPA
5 TD / 0 INT
211.85 QB Rating
vs Non-Power 5 D1 teams (Eastern Michigan, MTSU)
44/77 (57%)
731 yards (366 YPG)
9.5 YPA
7 TD / 0 INT
166.89 QB Rating
vs Power-5 Teams (9 games)
167/321 (52%)
2,266 yards (252 YPG)
7.1 YPA
11 TD / 10 INT
116.41 QB Rating

No Eason? He should definitely be on the list before Patterson. He likely has the most potential of any SEC QB.

Imagine that, Bama has better ranked players than Auburn. Bring on Bowl for his facts.

Nope, not listed. Agree - should be in there somewhere around #175-200 IMHO.

Jonah Williams not a 5 star, list is garbage

Easily. He's a really good back on a pretty bad team.

I was thinking the list was garbage with I saw Rashaan Evans listed above Shawn Dion Hamilton. It MAY turn out to be different...but it reminds me of Nico Johnson vs CJ Moseley. Moseley kept proving it on the field but everyone was still stuck on Nico's recruiting stars.
Also, I'd take UF's WR Galloway over Calvin Ridley in a heartbeat.

Went back and looked and couldn't believe his YPC numbers on that team with a below average OL and a bad QB.
Great player. That's a bad oversight on their part.

Eh, I actually think it's the opposite. SDH is a great college LB, but he is physically "limited" (in terms of ceiling for the NFL and such). Evans isn't as experienced but his NFL ceiling is higher and he was really good the last 3 games when SDH went down. SDH has had a better football career so far (and might very well be better next year), but Evans is a better comparison to junior year Rueben Foster than Nico.
Mosley was always the better athlete between those 2.

I know, crazy that the reigning SEC Offensive POY (as a true freshman) is ranked around the #90 best player in CFB. Should be more like #987 or #2097.

That, along with Webb, were the 2 that jumped out to me as being glaring omissions. Especially with Patterson included.

Hurts really isn't that good and you know it

quote:Not disagreeing but some guys are just ball players...that overcome not being as physically gifted. Josh Bynes at Auburn was one slow LB...but he was just a ball player. Still in the NFL last time I checked. Same goes for current LB Deshaun Davis. I put SDH in that same category. Obviously, there have been tons of players more physically gifted but didn't amount to much because they didn't have the other intangibles. Jury def still out on Rashaan Evans...but I just wouldn't rank him above SDH at this point...the guy is a baller and has proven it on the field. Evans being a better player based on potential is really optimistic. Too much emphasis on potential, not enough on production IMO
Mosley was always the better athlete between those 2.

He isn't a Top 20 player like ESPN ranked him. He is 100% worthy of being ranked somewhere around 100th or so. His stats, productivity and plays in big spots as a true freshman warrant that.
