(3-1) record as the #1 team; a lot of fun watching that team. What was the atmosphere like in Starkville that season? Was this season more enjoyable than the 1998 SEC West title?

I know the season ended not like you wanted it to but it's the SEC, and it's rough every week.

And of course Dak Prescott!

Place was lit for the Auburn game. And wet and miserable for me.

Good times before that game in that season though. I remember feeling like Auburn was about to reel off a fricking awesome run of several championship caliber teams during that pregame. Just wafflestomped LSU and life was great.

Since then, Malzahn has gotten exposed in so many ways. That game actually was the first game I remember thinking our red zone play calling was atrocious. Definitely wouldn't be the last.

Dak attack brought all of us down to earth.

That team was very, very good but I thought Dak was worn down by the end of the season. They were not the same team that skullfricked A&M and beat Auburn pretty easily.

Prior to the Bama game, the atmosphere was unreal. The Auburn game was electric. Unfortunately, the season did not end the way we'd like.

It was the weirdest feeling in my sports life. I remember going to the first home game,Arkansas, that we were ranked #1. Just seeing the 1 by our emblem on the scoreboard and in the program was strange. It was one of those "Is this real?" moments. I guess the State fan in me knew it wouldn't end well, but I sure enjoyed the ride.

Justin Thomas destroyed them to end the year

As he did most teams that year. And we had no defensive coordinator by that point.

It was a fun ride and for a few weeks MSU was a CFP threat. They were solid enough to get to Atlanta. I remember the game against Alabama. Thought they were going to win. Their #1 run was very similar to non-traditional teams like #2 Kansas and #1 Missouri in 2007. It was fun to see that because they aren't typical of doing that.

I was a senior during the 98 SEC West run.

To be fair, we kind of backed our way into that. We lost by 40 to a three win LSU team. Clint Stoerner fumbling against tennessee made things exciting for the week of the Arkansas game.

The 2014 season was insane. The win in Tiger Stadium, beating down A&M and then beating auburn in three straight weeks was something State fans could have never imagined. Being No. 1 in the first ever playoff rankings will be a bit of obscure trivia one day, but that was a fun season.

I was broke as Sh*t because of recent job loss... we played auburn and my tickets were going for 500 a pop online. I had 4. I didn't sell them and we beat the sh*t out of them. Might be the best decision of my life.

2014 was definitely more enjoyable. I've got a good friend who went to LSU and I remember calling him after our first game against USM and told him he better be ready, that our defensive line was huge and absolutely nasty. He didn't believe me. Auburn game was amazing, then it fell apart against Bama. Our guys just didn't know how to handle going into that atmosphere #1. I was on about row 15 or so and you could see it. No problems pre game but we got on the wrong side of the field position game early and the players and Mullen got tight and too conservative. I still think we could've won that day if he'd have loosened up sooner. That and contain the Bama QB on 2 plays.

Have the opposite story of that game.

My wife and I had tickets, and my bandwagon in laws wanted to come. They didn't have tickets, but had made contact with someone that said they would sell them two for $100 each.

They rode up there with us, and as I had told them all week, with tickets approaching $300, $400 and $500, there was no way that they were getting tickets for $100. Of course the guy doesn't show up doesn't answer calls. I was so mad - Had to sell our two for $300 each 30 minutes before the game and watch the game at a restaurant because we couldn't leave them alone.

Maddest I have ever been at my mother in law.

State beat 6 undefeated teams in a row that year (2014). Great year to be a Bulldog fan.

I think I'd have told the in laws to bring their own vehicle in case things didn't work out. That was the first season we started taking our oldest son to the games. He just thought we were supposed to win every game. I had tell him about the good old days when I was a kid and i'd get excited on the way to a game once or twice a year when Leanord Postero didn't pick us to lose. Usually involved Arkansas State and when we got Tulane at home.

The 2014 Auburn game atmosphere will probably never be bested at State. I'm biased, but our crowd got loud as hell in that one.

I invited my buddy from Pittsburgh to the Auburn game before the season started (thinking it would be a decent environment for a yankee's first SEC football game). We ended up getting Gameday, beating the hell outta the #2 team, and watching Dak Prescott become legendary. Suffice to say, his view of Starkville is now slightly skewed compared to mainstream thought.
