2009, 2010 Iron Bowls: How Big a Factor Was Sloppy Play by the Alabama Defense?

2009 Box Score
2010 Box Score
In 2009, Auburn scored on a 67 yard run and 72 yard yard pass.

YouTube: 72 Yard Touchdown Pass
67 + 72 = 139 yards. Despite running at least 59 other plays, Auburn only totaled 185 yards in the rest of the ball game. Let's not pretend that the 2 big plays didn't happen. What I want everyone to notice is that Auburn gained nearly half their yards on two huge plays.

Let's move on to 2010.
Cam Newton threw a 36 and 70 yard touchdown pass.

YouTube: 70 Yard Touchdown Pass
On both plays, the Alabama defender wearing #4 (Mark Barron) had a good shot at preventing a touchdown yet didn't both times.
After the game, it was revealed that Mark Barron had torn his pectoral muscle while trying to prevent Auburn's first touchdown pass.
Mark Barron Suffered a Significant Injury When on the Play That the Camback Began.
Let's not pretend that the 2 big plays didn't happen. What I want everyone to notice is that Auburn gained 106 of their 216 passing yards on two huge plays where an injured safety couldn't complete a play on the ball to prevent a touchdown.

So Auburn fans, are you banking on in-game injuries to star players on Alabama's team? Are you banking on gaining big yardage and 2 touchdowns due to uncharacteristically sloppy play by an Alabama defender?

From what I have observed, I'd be surprised to see Auburn score more than 2 offensive touchdowns versus Alabama's 1st string (including D-line rotation and special packages). Another interesting thing of note is that Malzahn's offense never had to settle for a field goal versus Alabama. Will that trend be broken Saturday?

Alabama fans, how would you compare the 2009 and 2013 defenses?

I think most, reasonable or objective fans can see that this year's defense has played better and been more dominant than the 2010 Alabama defense. The 2010 Alabama defense was only impressive in the 1st half of the Iron Bowl and the Capital One Bowl. The 2010 Arkansas, South Carolina, LSU, and Camback games aren't worth bragging about.

@AUBlog: #stats RT @ESPNStatsInfo: Nick Saban is 6-5 overall vs. Auburn as HC, but 0-5 against Auburn team that finishes season w/ at least 9 wins.

So let me try to understand what you're saying here...

Malzahn offenses tend to make big plays on Saban's defenses?

Is that about right?

I know people like to believe their teams bad play is self inflicted. Hell even I am guilty of it. However, many times it is because the opposing team has a better game plan and exposes a weakness or are just a better team.

With that said it is obvious at times when a team in fact perform poorly do to mental or physical breakdowns.

2009 I believe Auburn came out with a good game plan and Bama came back because they were an overall better team.

2010 I believe it was the opposite to 2009.

If it took Malzahn 2 all Americans, a QB god, and 2 broken plays to beat a 9-2 Alabama squad by ONE point, then what makes auburn fans think a team with a DB as a QB, a terrible pass offense, and and a porous defense can beat an 11-0 team with a 7 deep running back stable, a QB that has only lost 2 games as a starter, and the deepest receiver corps in the country? Along with an all American linebacker and a stonewall run defense.

Yes I'm aware that's a massive run on. DWI.

ETA: Wasn't a response to Gardevoir. Just the auburn fans.

You're right.

It's going to be very difficult for Auburn to score points and gain lots of yards against Alabama.

The key for Auburn's offense is to not make mistakes and allow the punters to pin Alabama back.

But the crucial component of an Auburn victory is the effect the crowd can have on Alabama's offense. Alabama's offense has had a few shitty performances, and I have no doubt that they will start the game sluggishly. Auburn's defense has to capitalize on that and make the game come down to the 4th quarter.

Because a team with all of this is still miraculously #4 in the BCS with 1 loss in 11 games. Maybe, just maybe, this Auburn team is better than what you've described.

I recognize that Alabama is a great tackling team, therefore, if AU is to score touchdowns some of them will have to be of the big play variety.

It is hard to drive the ball against Alabama. I think we will need 5 big passes(20+ yards), 4 big runs(15+ yards), and some Bama turnovers (+2) for Auburn to pull this upset. Throw in a really good special teams performance and AU can get this done.

But Auburn is 1-6 vs. Nick Saban's teams with 10 or more wins.
