THIS Iron Bowl. Not Kick Six, not 1993, not punt Bama punt, THIS Iron Bowl was the most painful to lose. We roll into Auburn with a 10-0 record, ranked number 2 and win this game and we play in the Sugar Bowl for the national title.

The most painful thing is Auburn shouldn't have been on the field with us this day. Just like 1972. We had steamrolled through the schedule. All the other losses at JHS, meh, Auburn was at least as good as we were, including 2013 and I knew that but this game shouldn't have been close. Curry knew he could never handle big games and resigned shortly afterwards to go to the less pressure cooker of Kentucky. We showed up to play Miami uninspired in the Sugar Bowl and lost 33-27 when we were better than they were as well. I have not to this day watched the replay of this game and won't as long as I live. This did make the 90 win that much sweeter though.

So the "desperation block" on the FG against Penn state was anti-climatic?

TDTony (and any other Rant elders), what was the climate like back then that led to the IB being held in Auburn for the first time? I always hear the stories from an AU perspective but what about from UA?

Coaching turnover and AD changes. Leadership finally relented on a stance that Alabama would never play at Auburn.

I was a junior at Auburn and that game, the atmosphere and the party afterwards was incredible.

Oddly, it was probably the best gift Bryant-Denny ever received.

The 1972 was probably the worst

Leading up to the game there were rumors that Bama fans were going to block the roads leading into Auburn. Another was 200,000 were going to show up to prove Auburn could not handle a large turnout. Quite a few people were very upset about the game coming to Auburn.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was the most "electric" I have ever experienced. Extremely loud nonstop during the game,
and the "first time ever" was the beginning of the end for Legion Field.

Back then "shakers" weren't made out of plastic, they were made out of paper.

There were so many shakers being shaken with such vigor that there was an orange-and-blue haze sitting over the student section.

If I ever get lung cancer, since I don't smoke I'm gonna blame it on those shakers that day.

Reggie slack is my second favorite auburn qb behind dameyune craig. He was just a ballplayer.

Pay no attention to Tony. For a supposed Bama fan, he gets a fundamental fact wrong in pretty much every post he makes. I think he is an alter.

Not only did the 89 team have a miracle escape against Penn State, they scraped by 1-10 (0-7 SEC) Vandy by 6 points, Swothwest Loiusania by 7 at home, and trailed Ole Miss by 21 before coming back and blowing them out.

The only team of note they'd beaten prior to the Iron Bowl was eventual champ Tennessee. Excluding UT, the other SEC teams they had played before Auburn ended up finishing 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th in the conference.

That Bama team wasn't one of destiny. It was one that benefited from an OC that was a near magician and a very favorable schedule. Auburn had played a much more difficult schedule and quite frankly were the better team and it really wasn't that close.

Curry was an idiot. This particular game proved how over his head he was. I would have helped him pack.

This game was the beginning of the end for big sporting events in B'ham. Bama pleaded with them to spend some money on Legion Field and we would have used it still. They refused. We left.

It was also an opportunity for Alabama to end the Iron Bowl but our leadership lacked the balls to do it. Losing the Iron Bowl would have hurt Auburn worse that it would have hurt Bama. We said we would never play in Jordan Hare and we should have stuck to our guns.

Thank god. Birmingham is dangerous/crumbling and off-campus stadiums are inconvenient for fans and players alike.

Quite a bit of the actual city of Birmingham is really awful. 1 in every 15 residents is robbed annually and it's the carjacking capital of the world. Obviously the Vestavia Hills and Hoover areas are considerably better.

Actually, UT, Bama, and Auburn all finished 6-1 in the conference and head to head was circular with Bama beating UT, UT beating Auburn, and Auburn beating Alabama. All three are listed as co-champs for the season in the official SEC media guide.

LINK

Alabama got the Sugar Bowl bid with Tennessee going to the Cotton. Auburn played in Tampa's Hall of Fame Bowl.

Link to stats? I've lived in the Birmingham area for 25 years and don't know a single person that has ever been carjacked. You don't even hear stories or reports very often.

I'm sure that one time 15 years ago when daddy took you from your Randolph County trailer to visit the big city was real scary for you, but I'm sorry to tell you that you're just an idiot.
