I was living in nyc at the time. I left work and walked over to the waldorf. I blended in with ivan maisel and walked in to the lobby. So, a kid from birmingham, all i knew to do was call in the finebaum show. He has me live on air, i am walking through the lobby. I go to the front desk and ask to see Mal Moore. I am turned away. I take the next turn and walk right into Rich Rod and his wife. I was instantly shocked at her appearance. I began to describe her on air and the rest is history. Btw, Rich Rod was one big dude. Had he heard me ,I wouldn't be here today.

How did you describe her? Paul disputes the story, but Paul letting you say disparaging things about Rita is not the same thing as Paul saying disparaging things about Rita, and that's where the disconnect comes in with the story.

I cant remember exactly. I encouraged everyone to go online and look her up. I am sure she is a nice lady but she really looked cheap. Almost an orange tint skin with a short dress.

I encourage them not to. I posted a pic that makes her look reasonably attractive. Most do not.

Saban at Michigan would have been scary as well.
UCLA as well. Dirty secret is that the alumni at UCLA would pay for a guy like Saban back then

Hahaha. A few years ago, I was sitting around drinking with some friends and they brought up the Rich Rod hiring and how it imploded and we landed Saban. Someone said yea, thank the Finebaum show for that one. I have sense tried to take credit for their football happiness over the last 10 years.

I credit the Finebaum Show and its incessant talk about Rich Rod's wife's appearance for changing his mind. I think she had some really big hair back then or something.
WHEW!

West Virginia

Had Rich Rod gone to Bama in 2006, the West Virginia job probably would have been filled before the next off-season.

It was the hair also. It was her hair or something like that with the orange skin that got me going on air.

I remember during that time hearing someone call in (I think it was on Finebaum) and talk about Rita's "Camaro hair." That whole search was a lot of fun / agony.

Rodriguez didn't turn down the Bama job, the offer was withdrawn.

Maybe this?

I heard that because Saban had denied the job initially, Bama pulled the trigger for Rich. Shortly after, Sexton contacted Bama and said WTF are you doing?, Saban wants the job, but he couldn't come out and say so till after the season was completely over for Miami.

This is exactly what I was hearing from semi-connected Bama folks at the time it was happening.

Even on the day nearly two weeks later when Saban said this.

What a coward the author is, yellow journalism at it's best, considering his choice of words for title, "...Here's what REALLY happened." Umm, I guess he interviewed Mal Moore for the story? I guess Nick Saban granted an interview, lol.

I often wonder had Saban declined the Bama job if he would have landed at Auburn a year (or 2) later?

With Auburn's rep for the BOT micromanaging the Ath Dept?

Heck no. He'd run in the opposite direction.
