2014 - Ohio State was the 4-seed
2015 - Alabama was the 2-seed
2016 - Clemson was the 2-seed
2015 - Alabama was the 2-seed
2016 - Clemson was the 2-seed

The thing is, each year (with the exception of maybe 2014), the #1 seed was obvious.
In 2015, Clemson was the only unbeaten left and in 2016, Alabama was the only unbeaten besides Western Michigan.

In fact, the lower seed has won the NCG every time (which does not logically follow from your point, but the two are clearly related).

#3 has been outscored 128-20. And has been shut out the past two years. 59-20, 38-0, and 31-0.
