Is Spurrier washed up or is South Carolina a black hole ?

No doubt what Spurrier did at Florida is behind Bear Bryant and maybe a couple of others.Plus, even though Florida State,Miami,VPI and Boston College weren't in the league at the time,Spurrier's ACC co-championship at Duke was remarkable.
But,Spurrier's last game at Florida was the 2002 Orange Bowl. His tenure with Washington was rather uneventful. So far,his time in Columbia has been mediocre at best.Sure there have been some upsets, but nothing to make anyone think South Carolina is a threat to win the SEC,or even SEC East.
He seems more agitated and less cocky now like he's frustrated beyond belief and can't figure out what's going on.
But South Carolina is notorious for hiring a 'name' and turning him into a has-been. Holtz came out of retirement and had an occassional good team only to get run out. In basketball they lured Eddie Fogler from Vanderbilt.Fogler slowly built up a good team winning the SEC title in 1997 and being a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament only to be humilitated and eliminated by #15 Coppin State. Dave Odum left a good program at Wake Forest only to never make the NCAA's,but did win the NIT twice. A nice accomplishment, but nothing like it was pre 1975.
Does it really matter who coaches South Carolina ?

I say both. He really seems to have lost his edge. That being said, I hope we don't underestimate them.

I think he's just not getting the players he's use to. I've heard he doesnt' put much effort into recruiting at USC. I think he's still a great X's and O's coach.

He looks defeated on the sidelines. I really think he believed he could turn it around there. Problem is with all the other programs recruiting in those areas it's hard to get the level of players that you need to compete in the SEC.

Black hole. Holtz and Spurrier couldn't do shite there. They have a crappy recruiting base and another in state school who is better and has more history than USC.

Nick Saban could win at South Carolina

Well, does that prove that he's lost interest ? South Carolina's fanbase is as passionate as anyone's. Wonderful facilities and they have their share of big donors. Maybe not the Ohio State and Florida level, but few schools do.
South Carolina HS isn't on the level as Florida,Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana's,but its better than West Virginia's and New Jersey's which makes West Virginia's resurgance and Rutgers' emergence which makes South Carolina's continued running in place all the more perplexing.

Put USC in the Big Least and see how they do.

I don't think anyone questions SEC > Big East. But South Carolina is in the SEC. When he was hired a lot of people though recruits would be all over the chance to play for Spurrier. Is it him or is South Carolina a no-win for anybody ?

I'm thinking that SC may be a black hole more than anything else. Spurrier may be experiencing a slump, but a real football coach can adjust and overcome if he is in the right environment.
I don't want to sound like one of those fans that dredges up the past, but Coach Bryant is a perfect example. After the seasons from 1967-1970, many people were wondering if he was out of date. Even he wondered himself and considered taking the Miami Dolphins job; however, he decided to practice what he preached and not ever quit. He went out to Texas and learned the wishbone offense, told his staff that they were going to live or die trying it, and the rest is history.
If Spurrier really, really wanted to succeed, he probably could, but I don't know if he can do it in SC.

Black hole:
Paul Diezel - could not do it
Lou Holtz - could not do it
Steve Spurrier - could not do it
SC is where great old coaches go to retire.

That is an amazing stat. How many schools have had 3 coaches win a National title at another school coach their school ?
National title or bust is insane, but Holtz and Spurrier haven't come close to an SEC East title.Dietzel did win an ACC title in 1969.

But they don't go to South Carolina:
-2008 Top 10 in SC-
1 DaQuan Bowers DE 6-4/267 Clemson
2 A.J. Green WR 6-4/184 Georgia
3 Charles Whitlock DB 5-11/172 South Carolina .
4 Andre Ellington RB 5-10/170 Clemson
5 Kenneth Page OL 6-4/293 Clemson
6 Bruce Taylor LB 6-3/230 Virginia Tech
7 Marquan Jones WR 6-0/173 Clemson
8 Everett Dawkins DE 6-2/242 Florida State
9 Dalton Freeman OL 6-6/270 Clemson
10 Robert Quinn DE 6-5/245 North Carolina

Dietzel did win an ACC title in 1969.

Neither.
Spurrier just hasn't been able to recruit any decent quarterbacks yet, and the offense has been horrible as a result. He also happens to be playing in what might be the best division in the history of CFB with the SEC East in 2008.
