The United States created ISIS as a boogeyman to scare Americans into giving up more freedoms in the name of "national security".

they're certainly real, but make no mistake...the US and other powers could easily defeat ISIS in very little time if they deemed it necessary.
ISIS is a useful tool...nothing more.

ISIS is a real entity, and not of US creation. The federal government can't figure out how to run a website, vast secret conspiracies are pretty much impossible for it.
Unless you meant in the hype sense. In that case, ISIS isn't a threat to us just like Japan was never a threat to us, or Germany, or Vietnam, or North Korea, or Grenada, or Spain, or Barbary Pirates.
There is an old British foreign policy philosophy from the Victorian era: It's better to fight them over there than over here.
This is pretty much what our foreign policy has shaped around since World War 1, and it's one of the reasons why we haven't had a war on US soil in 150 years (as badleroydawg highlights). The British haven't had a war on UK soil for the same reason. Yes, the Channel has something to do with that. But so does the fact that the British declared war when Belgium as invaded, not the Home Isles. Norway had a water barrier too, but it didn't help them.
ISIS is a major destabilizing force in the region, which is great for me, I work in O&G and really want $100 barrel of oil again. Right now, they aren't a major threat to invade US soil, or break out of their current Iraq/Syria bubble. But, they could if left unchecked.
ISIS isn't the major boogey man though, Iran is. Netanyahu made a point of directing congress to focus on Iran, not ISIS. That's because Israel and the Sunnis (led by Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt) don't see ISIS (also Sunni) as the main threat. Israel and SA are quietly building an alliance now that we have basically abandoned the Sunnis for the Shi'a, and the Wahhabists don't give a damn about Al Qaeda or ISIS, not in a real sense.
ISIS is going to fall off the table and onto the back burner, and so is Al Qaeda. Hell, the Israelis have now provided tacit air support for Al Qaeda Nursa Front (Syria) advances in Syria, and the Egyptians have stopped paying lip service to closing off Gaza and are now aggressively cooperating with Israeli efforts to contain and destroy HAMAS (an Iran ally).
All the Israel haters are going to be tripping all over themselves in about 5 years to come up with new ideas on how the Israelis are so evil when the Saudis, Jordanians, and Egyptians are waving blue and white pom poms.

ISIS is not as major of a threat as alot of people perceive it to be. They aren't destabilizing anything. They are simply using the fear of the unknown. They are no more of a threat than North Korea (which is basically none, outside of technology).
As to the O&G comment, oil prices are very low currently. The low oil prices are actually putting economic pressure on Russia more than anything, which helps the US immensely.

Norway is less of strategic point, but the UK was definitely bombed by Germans. The only time outside of the Revolutionary or Civil War where we have been attacked is Pearl Harbor and 9/11.
Iran is the about the same as North Korea. They don't have the military power to be a credible threat.
Netanyahu has no business telling our congress what we should do. I'm no Israel hater, but he has his own country to run. Also, the letter from certain Republicans was way out of line. The President and Sec of State are our foreign ambassadors for a reason, let them do their job, especially when they are currently in talks.

Killz is getting his Sleepy Tiger freak on but I do tend to agree with him in that we feed fear in the US to eradicate and undermine freedoms granted by our founding fathers. Would I go so far as to label it a conspiracy, probably not, but most things viewed as conspiracy driven are just policies from an arrogant and out of touch leadership who are sublimating their own fears on the general public.

frick you
An administration of thousands of people correlated together to kill americans. That's what you're saying.
You do know that Obama isn'a a military commander, right?

I'm more scared of our own government and media than I am of ISIS.
If anything, the fight against ISIS is uniting the Mideast in ways we haven't seen before while enabling the US to remain a major player in the region.
Useful tool.

Daesh grew out of the Islamic State of Iraq.
The Islamic State of Iraq grew out of the Mujahdeen Shura Council.
The Mujahadeen Shura council grew out of Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn.
Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn grew out of Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad.
Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad grew out of Al Qaeda in Afghaistan.
Al Qaeda in Afghanistan grew out of Arabic Jihadis that travelled to Afghanistan to fight the Soviets.
The Soviets grew out of a revolution led by Vladamir Lenin.
Vladamir Lenin was smuggled into Russia during WW1 by the German Kaiser to destabilize the country.
The Germans are to blame for Daesh.

Terrorism has turned into big business with changes in social media, faster Islam spread and other benefactors. It was only a matter of time before groups merged.
Very few terror networks have a long-term contengincy plan (see Haqqani network, one of the few). Most just want $$ and power. America knew this was going to happen for years, but there was no way to know who and where the campaign would begin from. Iraq is a perfect storm. Split 50/50 Sunni / Shia, making it a "perfect storm" breeding ground for outlying support from particular religous sects.
If anything good, ISIS is gaining concern from Iran and slowing down any other large picture plans they do have as a country.
