I took my 7 yr old to the Spring Game and he enjoyed it...although a real game will be much more intense.
The 4 year old was done after the first half so at least for him that's too young. Also, to a kid football is pretty repetitive. It's not so much "can they take it" as it is what age can they actually enjoy the game and not drive you nuts in the process.
I think that 6/7 may be a good time to dip your toes in but you see younger kids there all the time. Your mileage may vary.

Is his middle-name a family name, I hope?
....Or did you actually name him after the politician/treasonous/mass-murdering/war criminal /former president/terrorist from Illinois?

We took our 4 year old grand daughter to the Tennessee game last year. She had a great time. (Of course her momma was there to watch her)

My 1st daughter was 6 when she went to her first UGA game and my 2nd daughter was 5 when she went to her first.
They're now 15 and 12 and have each seen about 18-20 games over the past 8 years. My 15 year old can probably name every UGA football player of the past 5 or 6 years. She's nuts about the Falcons like that too. I coach the 8th grade Etowah football team and my 15 year old helps me watch/analyze film on HUDL every week and draw up game plans.
It's a blast getting your kids involved in this stuff. Start as early as possible, IMO. They start to grasp concepts around age 5, though. Anything before then and it's just noise and confusion to them.

No wife picked it she is a husker fan. I wouldn't marry someone who didn't think Lincoln deserved to die. I got two names she got one, it was either that or Talon. I'm trying to make it a family name been James since my grandfather James Herschel. He was a founder of the motor coach club.
