Balter Brewing expected to open on the corner of Jackson and Broadway this August. The owners are converting it from the old out dated gas station into a Brewery and Beer Garden.

quote:

You might be expecting an introduction to the Balter family at this point. It turns out “Balter,” according to the Balter Brewing website, is a verb meaning to “dance without particular grace or skill, but with enjoyment.” Sounds like a fun place and that’s exactly what Blaine Wedekind told me they intend to build at the corner of Jackson and Broadway – the site of the former Corner BP. In short, the concept is a craft brewery with a restaurant serving “elegant bar food,” a beer garden and sometimes scene for live music. Sounds like a place one might just decide to balter.

quote:

The brewing component will include a seven barrel system with the intent of creating, “big flavorful, unique beers.” Blaine said the two, “want to help put Knoxville on the map for brewing trips.” They want it, “to be an experience for the beer explorer.” The intent is to brew enough beer for the brew pub and for customers to take home in growlers.

They have no plans to bottle or distribute the beer, meaning people will need to come to Knoxville to experience it. Available beers will include an IPA, Brown Ale, Porter, a Huckleberry Wheat Ale, and a Breakfast Stout. That one caught my attention. He said breakfast malts would be used. I’m certainly intrigued. They will also serve wine, which he assures me will be of a good quality (he’s considering Decoy Wine) and they will also have a full bar with craft cocktails. He wants everyone to find something to enjoy.

As a die hard Knoxville enthusiast, I always enjoy seeing stuff life this. The more that section of Jackson Ave. Continues to grow the better.

On a side note, I can't wait for the development to begin for the new River walk park and shopping/condos that will be coming on the other side of Henley St. Baptist Hospital should be completely removed in the next few months and then they're bringing in high scale condos and beginning to develop the river front in that section of South Knoxville much like Chattanooga has done with their river front areas. It's going to be big in continuing to attract people and grow the city. As well as adding another newer section to downtown.

That's awesome, and you're right, Jackson is really getting churched up.

Have you heard anything about that German brewery that's supposed to open? Fanatic brewing opened pretty recently but I haven't tried their beer. Dude at hops and hollers wasn't a fan and I trust his palate. I think they only have a couple production beers right now anyway.

I agree. I love the renasissance going on all over downtown and Mayor Rogero's vision for the city. It's great to see downtown really start to come back to life again.

I've heard of Fanatic brewing, but I haven't been down there yet. I ussually hit up Hops and Hollers or Central Flatts and tapps when I'm out that way. Everything's worth checking out atleast once though. Especially if it's a local's thing, so I'll probably make my way out there this spring.

I haven't heard about the German Brewery, but that would be awesome if it was authentic. My wife was born and raised in Germany and my son is being brought up bilingual.

That would be great for that area. Have you seen a link with more information on it?

Here's some illustrations on what's coming to that area in the near future as far as the River Walk development goes. South Knoxville is going to look like something none of us have ever witnessed in our life times. Atleast I hope.

There's going to be a lot more added, but that's the design for that specific section of the River Walk. Sutree's landing park is going to be built to the right of that illustration close to South Knox Elementary and across the river from the Women's basketball hall of fame. It will bring a public park (more info below) directly on the water similar to what Chatt has. Also, Blount Ave. on both sides of Henley St. is going to be under going a huge face lift for the restaurants and bars, hotel, shopping, and condo's/apartments that are all coming in.

It's going to be like it's own district basically once it's complete.

More information on Sutree's Landing Park:

quote:

Phase 1A (yellow) includes construction on a new street, Waterfront Drive. Phase 1B (blue) is construction on Suttree Landing Park. Phase 1C (orange) is where the Suttree Boathouse and Pavilion will be located.

Here's an article written by WBIR last month that Vice Mayor Nick Pavlis put on his website in regards to the upcoming development.

quote:

City Council members Tuesday gave the go-ahead for a handful of highly anticipated projects, including a $3.34 million South Knoxville waterfront park that has been in the works for nearly a decade.

Suttree Landing, to bebuilt on 8.25 acres along Fort Loudoun Lake, will include a natural water feature, event lawn, boat dock, playground and riverwalk.

Construction could start in the next six to eight weeks and will take roughly a year to complete, said Bob Whetsel, the city’s redevelopment director.

“This was a big help with the old Baptist Hospital (site),” Whetsel said. “They saw the city spending money and that’s another thing that helped get that going.”

The old hospital is currently being razed to make way for a $115 million development project that includes housing, event space, retailers and offices.

There will also be a handful of adjacent lots for private development, Whetsel said.

Council members first sought a firm to design the waterfront park in 2008, before it was stalled by the economic downturn. When Mayor Madeline Rogero took office, she renewed the push to build the park.

Council members Tuesday approved funding the park, one phase of a $7.5 million overall project thatalso includes a roadway and a boathouse. Construction is already underway on Waterfront Drive. A $500,000 boathouse has not yet been funded.

Also moving forward is a $1.13 million streetscape project surrounding Marble Alley Lofts, a 238-unit apartment project planned for a site bounded by Central and State streets.

The project includes improving sidewalks and landscaping, along with widening State Street, turning it into a two-way road.

TDK Construction Co.,which is developing the lofts, also won the bid for the streetscape.

Council members approved the slight rerouting of the first phase of the Knox-Blount Greenway. The construction is underway, but the city realized if it could avoid moving underground pipes and eliminating a retaining wall, it could save money, said Joe Walsh, city parks director.

With this approved new licensing agreement in place, this phase could be completed in May. The entire trail is aimed to run to the Smoky Mountains.

The Downtown rebirth/renaissance is definitely building momentum.

It sounds like the city/county officials finally got tired of being outdone by their Chattanooga counterparts.

I love this type of thing, so I'll bring more information to this thread as I come across it.

That's my local spot. I like flats and taps alright too, but I don't always like the crowd.

Those renderings you posted look fricking awesome. Please update when you come across new stuff. South knox is pretty run down. Would be awesome with that and all the bike trails already there.

I'd be at both a lot more if I didn't live in West Knoxville. I like H&H more than CFT as well.

Agree 100% -- & that's why it's got to get done.

This doesn't pertain to the South Knox waterfront, but here's some information about the Marble Alley luxury condo's slated to be finished later this year in downtown. They're located on State St. (Directly behind Gay St.) and the first residential construction downtown in 30 years.

Maple Hall, Knoxville's first ever downtown/urban bowling Alley/restaurant/bar is coming to Gay St. at the end of summer/first semester of class.

Maple Hall coming soon

quote:

After 2012 they traveled to other urban bowling centers accumulating ideas that might work in Knoxville and fit the space they’d leased. Of particular interest to them was Brooklyn Bowl which, if there had to be a single place, would be the place that they suggest helped them understand what they are after. A warehouse converted to a bowling alley, it features a 2,000 seat entertainment venue, Blue Ribbon Restaurant food and is LEED certified. They’ve since opened alleys in Las Vegas and London.

They also visited North Bowl in Philadelphia and Painted Pin in Atlanta. At Pinewood Social in Nashville they found a six-lane concept. Another just opened in Chattanooga. In each case, these urban lanes are attracting patrons through bowling and other activities. They noted that these are not lanes like those at suburban strip malls focusing on league play. Those are slowly dying (though Greg joined one last year), while a more social, urban concept version of bowling is doing well in any number of markets.

As I described it when I recently wrote about the JC Penny Bldg development, Maple Hall will feature two lanes on the north side of the space available for private parties or other groups who want lanes together. There will be six lanes in the main room and another four in the southern side, which may be for public or private use depending on demand. But there will be much, much more.

A Gay Street entrance will lead through a foyer down stairs that lead to the main space. Just behind the stairs will be a kitchen in which a James Beard nominated chef will set the menu. It will be a simple menu featuring small plates with unique, top-quality food. A full bar with a few featured cocktails and six taps. One tap will likely be a typical “bowling beer” and the others will be interesting local/regional/craft beers. Unique canned beers will also likely be available.

A half dozen and one changes coming to the city

Great website with knowledgeable and updated information on what's going on downtown.

Scruffy City's newly added 3rd floor roof top bar and terrace (far left hand side). Along with some updates on Marble Alley apartments on State St., another womens boutique in Market square and a few other things going on in the old city and Gay St.

That is genius. I liked Scruffy City Hall enough as it was, it is a cool venue or just a place to have good beers.

Acme feed and seed in Nashville has an awesome 3rd floor patio that overlooks the city...I am surprised more places don't do stuff like this.

ETA: This is kind off-topic, but has anyone been to Asheville lately? It is such a cool city, but the last couple of times I've been in WNC (which I love), I can't help but feel that the area is being invaded and changed by all the tools moving there. I know that the people who moved there made it awesome, but it seems like it is attracting a lot of assholes these days.

Seeing that TN brewery list, it gets me pumped that Knoxville is opening so many breweries. I hope we never lose our personality here. I think this area is a good mix of people and we still embrace our hillbilly heritage, sometimes to a fault of course haha. I just hope Knoxville never becomes as pretentious as Asheville.

Yeah, Scruffy City has always been solid, but the roof top bar/terrace pushes them towards the top.

I made it up to Asheville last October for a bachelors party. I had a great time, but I understand where you're coming from on the transplants. There's a lot going on up there. I love how it's not a very big city, but the downtown has almost unlimited things to do. We got shitty at a few of the bigger breweries and then went out for the night.

Vote for Knoxville to recieve 100k in funding to add to the already 42 mile trail in the city.

quote:

Bell Helmets is awarding $100,000 to fund a trailbuilding project, and you get to choose who gets the grant!

quote:

Location Knoxville, TN Sponsor Appalachian Mountain Bike Club

Situated in the heart of Knoxville, this bike park is being constructed with a range of trails that will appeal to a variety of riders. The highlight will be the proposed gravity trail that will feature rock gardens, drops, and constructed features in a highly visible area that will draw attention to this regionally unique trail.

We've made it to the final 3 in the Eastern region and currently have more than 1500+ votes over second place (Brevard, NC) and 2500+ votes over third place (Anniston, AL)

Go Vote!

The new Walnut St. parking garage is nearly completed and open for traffic. It adds an additional 1,100 parking spots to the downtown area.
