What are some of your complaints about current cell phone or laptop batteries? They are probably:
- Take too long to charge
- The charges never seem to last long enough.
- If you charge the item, and then leave it off or don't use it, the battery is still draining.
- Cost too much to replace
- If you work in dangerous environments, the threat of puncturing the battery can be a fire hazard.

Well Ming Gong, a Stanford Grad-Student and Researcher, comes through for the Win and a HUGE change to battery technology that is going to impact anyone who would use the now out-dated Lithium batteries.

In the video Gong shows his new Aluminium and Graphite Battery.
1. It can get a full charge in 1 minute.
2. It has no battery life decay from inactivity, (even thousands of cycles.)
- You could charge the battery, put it in a box, get it out 2 years later and it would still have a full charge.
3. Because there is no decay when it's not being used, the battery lasts longer than lithium batteries.
4. The battery is flexible and could work in objects, screens you would want to be able to bend.
5. If Gong's battery is punctured it is not a fire hazard (think of military application.)
6. The materials to make the battery cost a fraction of what it costs to produce a lithium battery.

I'm predicting that these batteries are the new industry standard within 3-4 years.

I wonder how much his cut will be, since he developed this as a Researcher at Stanford. I think Stanford is going to get the lion share, but he should hopefully become a mulit-millionaire out of this.

I assume his cut, even if it's really small, will make him a very rich man. Regardless, the salary someone will pay him for his knowledge and technical skills demonstrated thus far will be outrageous.

All of that sounds badass. I'm not holding my breath that it will be widespread anytime soon.

I agree with that, once he gets out of grad school (or even right now if the company that helped fund this research wants him) he will get a boat load of cash to help lead the product development.

cell phones, laptops, satellites, space probes, power station backups, car batteries, machinery batteries...the applications are huge and they'll be cheaper to make than current lithium products.

I think we'll start seeing it in cell phones and laptops within 3-4 years and once that happens it will really take off.

Only problem is who will keep replacing and buying new batteries?...like the old cameras, the money was made in selling film. It's like making a tire that lasts forever, no one keeps replacing tires.

That's why you're gonna see Duracell and Energizer start aggressively funding campaigns to prevent this from being available to the general public.

Corporatism holds us back as nation.

they've been trying to find something to replace lithium ion batteries for years now. they will never be able to make it an efficient as other technologies because of the core.

awesome if they are able to bring this to market.

One thing he did not talk about was the capacity.

Its great that it charges in 1 min but if I have to charge it every 5 mins, then its not a help

I think one of the major phone manufacturers is going to do this within 3 years (might be Apple, Samsung, Nokia, etc....) As soon as 1 does it, all will switch within 2 years, b/c of the competitive advantage.

The phone manufacturer will say, "But our Galaxy 8 phone, you can charge it in 1 minutes and it lasts much longer than all lithium batteries." That will be a huge marketing selling point to consumers.

In the government space, the manufacturer will say, "Our battery won't explode if shot while on your soldier or explode while on your fire fighter in an inferno."

For space businesses, it will say, "our battery charges quicker and holds a charge infinitely longer than your current batteries." Some space tech is solar charged, but this could produce more charge in less time or with less light.

He showed it powering two phones with one battery. I think the capacity on the model they release for consumer application will be greater than the lithiums they have today. There may be an article out there with the capacity of his current prototype, but I haven't looked for it.
