Who do y'all prefer AJ hire, Robert Kirby or Butch Pierre?

Can't say I'd prefer one over the other. Both are known as great recruiters.

George Lynch, the former North Carolina and Los Angeles Laker star and currently the director of player personnel at SMU, has been contacted by new University of Alabama head basketball coach Avery Johnson about a position on the UA staff. An individual with knowledge of the SMU program confirmed that Lynch had spoken to Johnson about joining the UA staff.

Would that be a good hire?

I don't know much about him and that tidbit really doesn't let us know if he would be a bench coach or director of operations or even strength coach like he has been at other places.

George DeWitt Lynch III (born September 3, 1970) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the NBA from 1993 to 2005. He holds the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill basketball record for most career steals.

Lynch was raised in Roanoke, Virginia, and played basketball at Patrick Henry High for coach Woody Dean. Lynch was part of the 1989 Virginia State Champion Team at Patrick Henry. For his senior year, he transferred to Flint Hill School, a prep school located outside Washington D.C. to better his chances at college prospects.

After leading the University of North Carolina to an NCAA title in 1993, he was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 12th overall pick in that year's NBA Draft. With the Lakers, he wore three different jersey numbers - #24, #30 and #34. Lynch was traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies along with Anthony Peeler in 1996 in order to open up salary cap space in order to sign Shaquille O'Neal. He joined the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent in 1999.

It was with Theo Ratliff, Tyrone Hill, Eric Snow, Dikembe Mutombo, Allen Iverson, and coach Larry Brown that he helped form one of the better defenses in the league.

After playing with the 76ers for three seasons, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in a three-way trade also involving Derrick Coleman, Jerome Moiso, Robert Traylor, and Vonteego Cummings, among others, in 2001, retiring after 2004-05.

On December 20, 2006, he joined the Southern Methodist University men's basketball staff under head coach Matt Doherty, who was part of North Carolina Tar Heels 1981-1982 NCAA championship team (thus, both played for coach Dean Smith). Lynch became the team's administrative assistant/graduate manager.[1] He moved on to be founder and director of Flight Nine Basketball from 2006 until 2010, then spent 2010-12 at UC-Irvine as a strength and conditioning coach for basketball and an assistant athletics director for community relations before re-joining the SMU men's basketball staff in 2012 under head coach and fellow UNC alum Larry Brown.[2]

@CecilHurt:I think that is TBD. Not the head assistant spot.

That's what Cecil said when I asked if he'd be a true assistant or director of ops.

anyone that he hires that has played at a power 5 conference and played in the league who has a personality will be a great hire. Kids want to be around former NBA players unless they are douche bags

Not necessarily. You still need one or two guys that can develop the guys and know X's and O's.

well that is a given and I would feel 100% confident that when AJ hires someone that they would know the game. It is hard to have played at a power 5 conference and then 12 years in the league and not know something about x and o's unless you are dumb as a rock.

I still wouldn't be surprised if he hired Mario Elle, or someone else who worked for Avery in Brooklyn or Dallas, to take over the he'd assistant spot.

Per Drew D, watch for Butch Pierre of Oklahoma State.

Jack Doss has also talked to CAJ.

I'd be underwhelmed if he was a bench assistant but director of operations would be good. It'd help with all the Huntsville kids. I also really hope we can get Pierre. Guy knows how to recruit.

Guess which popular Big 12 asst coach declined to join Avery Johnson's staff at Alabama? Details in the #VIPnews on LINK

Don't know how reputable this guy is, but you'd have to think he's implying Butch Pierre said no.

Seems like a dumb move to me to stay at OSU. Almost guaranteed to be fired next year.
