Looks like Thomas may be back soon. Very positive news from VQ:

"Lots of chatter on Coleman Thomas and the chance for good news there this week, sooner than later. Thomas has remained in steady contact with the coaches, specifically Butch Jones, and is taking the necessary steps to rejoin the team as soon as possible. He's remained working out and also spent time with his teammates as much as possible, including Saturday morning before the Vols' work inside Neyland Stadium."

Coleman was godawful last year but in his defense he was a true frosh forced to start on the oline at the toughest position possible while having never played that position. He's a center not a tackle but with Blair still on 2nd team and looking more and more like a bust, we're going to need CT this year even if it's just for depth. That line also had no veterans to guide him and was messing up a lot on its own at every position.

He should be a whole lot better this year even if he plays tackle again. The weight training he got to do in this offseason will help him greatly (oline development/lifting happens then as there are serious limits on what they're allowed to do during the season). That's one of the many reasons OL is such a developmental position (you can't just walk into it with the strength and weight as younger player fresh out of HS or even a RS year out the way you can at other positions and expect very good results).

Besides, it's not like he could get any worse.

PS. You're a bad man for making me defend CT even a little bit.

All of these linemen will get much better next year due to being in a college program 1 year and I have this sneaky suspicion that DeBord is going to get this OL on track.

Also, the OL got asked to do things they couldn't do last year.

He last coached O line in the 90s, correct? Does he have experience with spread and zone blocking schemes? Was he a noteworthy O line coach when that was his title? I really don't know much about the dude. Just curious why the line would make a leap with him as the off. coordinator.

Only thing I know to answer your question is Shannahan was using the zone scheme with the Broncos as early as the mid 90s so it's not like it had never been heard of at that point

Also Fulmer obviously hadn't coached Oline in a long time either yet his team's always had good Olines

Just pointing out silver linings

Alex Gibbs is credited with bringing the modern zone blocking scheme to the NFL in the mid to late 90's with the Broncos. The Bengals used a form of zone blocking from the mid-80s to early 90's, but didn't have the back side cut blocks that Gibbs thought was essential to the success of the wide gap play.

Iowa was the first college team that I knew of to zone block in the late '90s to early 00's.

Yeah, I don't think the dude is going to automatically suck or anything. I just wonder how much experience he really has with this offense outside of the last few months.

I'm not too concerned, I do think the line will be better. If the line is actually good, this team could be very good. If not, we are a bowl team at worst, but barely making a bowl would be disappointing.

I have said from the beginning we should go 8-4 regular season and it will be dissapointing if we go 7-5 but it could happen.

I don't see us winning more than 8 or less than 7

The Oklahoma game at home is a much bigger game than people think. We need to win that one badly

The attitude here is surprising right now, the attitude is "we may be able to beat UT." I know it will change as we get closer to the season but last season sent a shock wave through the Sooner fanbase.

The court officially dismissed all charges today. Hyams says we can expect possibly 2 former players to get arrested/charged over the incident.

I've heard *unconfirmed* an arrest warrant has already been issued for Sawyers. No idea who the other former player might be.
