I feel sick to my stomach reading these Alabama defensive stats

The Tide surrendered more than 500 yards in two of their last three games and 180 or more rushing yards in four of their final seven games. Auburn had a 20-point quarter in the Iron Bowl. Alabama's last two national championship-winning defenses (2011 and 2012) allowed 20 points or more in just three games combined.
Judged on that standard -- during Saban's Alabama tenure, is there any other? -- the defense has regressed. Would most teams accept a unit that ranked in the top 10 nationally in points allowed, rushing yards allowed, first downs allowed and red zone efficiency? A defense with three All-SEC selections? In a heartbeat.
But Alabama demands more from its defense, especially in big games. The Tide have allowed 87 points, 966 yards and 47 first downs in bowl losses to Oklahoma and Ohio State. Auburn rushed for 296 yards in the 2013 Iron Bowl, then passed for 456 in last year's game.

This is why I keep stating that Bama's been in decline for the last two or three years. Can you imagine the 2009 or 2011 Bama defense giving up 20 points in a quarter? How about allowing a team to rush for close to 300 yards or pass for 450 yards or give up 600+ yards in a game? What about allowing a crappy QB like Trevor Knight to throw for well over 300 yards? And I didn't even mention the Ohio State debacle when Elliott ran for over 200 yards and a very green QB with one career start under his belt looked like the second coming of Tim Tebow against them. Until the defense quits playing like garbage in big games, this team won't win squat no matter how well the offense performs.

Nowadays, if a team has a competent quarterback and running back that can stretch the field, they have a chance at beating Alabama. Speed, good quarterback play and horizontal stretching of the field beats Alabama, with deep passes over the top.

That 2011 defense spoiled me so bad. There was no team that could move on them.
....except Georgia Southern. Who gained 2.5x the yards and points that LSU did in 2 games vs. Alabama.

Yup as long as we are playing garbage CBs thats true, like the last 2 seasons. When we have dominant corners again, and our recruiting of them has been great the last 2 cycles, then it wont be.
With that being said we were still either the second or best team in the nation last year sooooo............................. the OP can

Pretty simple. Offenses are better than they used to be. Total defensive stats will be worse. The metric to watch is where your stats rank.

You enjoyed drawing that out for dramatic effect.

Lol you just described an offense that will beat any team.

What beats Bama is tempo and a QB who is extremely consistent.

College football is evolving. Saban's original scheme has been figured out. I say his 'original' scheme because even he realizes he needs to adapt, and we've seen this with the changes he's implemented. It's an offense's game right now so don't be surprised to see more high scoring games from the Tide this season.

these past 2 seasons have resembled closely. 1st and 2nd down we look like bama. however on 3rd and long, omg, we lose our freaking minds. we give up every yard necessary for the first down. but this season we added giving up td's. slow lbr's, playing a cb that cant keep up. sheesh. i blame the coaches for running the same thing over n over with the same personnel. getting the same results. but being so boneheaded they wouldnt change. now they did put sylve in for jackson against auburn and he stopped the gushing vessel. but that was it for him. ej played out the season giving up td after td

Well you absolutely were not the best team last year. Bama may well have been #2, but I think Oregon would have been interesting for Bama just based on the size of Bama's D and their lateral movement at the LB position

Let them believe what they want. History to Bama fans is like a nice pair of tits to you and I.

Yes, but Kamara might be even better.
