Wait a minute, you can't say "Retard" on TV anymore?

Casually watching Tropic Thunder on FX, and the "Never go full retard" scene was edited to:

"You went full Special. Everyone knows that you never go full Special".

You've got to be joking. That scene is borderline sacred.

Let's spend the night together was changed to Let's spend some time together on Ed Sullivan. Jagger famously rolled his eyes.

There's a radio version of "Brown Eyed Girl" that changes "makin' love in the green grass" to "slippin' and a-slidin"

This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps

Well that's fricking retarded.

Seriously, the meaning of retarded is medical and apt it's how we use these words that make them mean or inappropriate. It's all in how you say it and who you apply it to. If we all but ban retard, it won't make a bit of difference. Americans will just use another another word. Kids are both creative and cruel that way.

That said, anyone who calls someone with mental disabilities is a fricking a-hole.

Exactly. You can turn ANY word into a weapon. Hell, you can turn the word special into a slam.

You don't call retarded people "retards". It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they're acting retarded.

I agree. Words have power. These hurtful labels offer nothing more than a cheap laugh, at best. At worst, they are the shouted hate-filled epithets of a violent bully. We can acknowledge the power of these words, and like a kingdom defending a barbarian linguistic army, build a verbal wall around us. Let us transcend the R-Word like civilized men and women, not submit to their power like pussy counts and figgots.
