This happened earlier tonight basically where the Mo/Tn/AR state lines all meet and tremors were felt all around Memphis
I was in east Memphis and didn't feel anything but 4.0 is pretty big compared to the little stuff we have around here all the time (usually 2.4 or less) hope it doesn't mean more to come
Don't know if anyone cares at all about this ive just always found the New Madrid fault interesting and they always say we are due since the last big earthquake was the one in 1811-1812 but the truth is they really don't know shite.
It could wipe Memphis and surrounding area off the map tomorrow or never do anything again for 1000 years

So what's the downside to wiping out Memphis? I'm from the bootheel of Miz & lived in Memphis as a kid.....Memphis used to be a great city....40 yrs ago.
New Madrid fault.......the big one will hit one day for sure.

There any fracking going on around there?

Every now and again we'll feel tremors up here in Louisville. Had one a couple years ago that happened just as soon as I got up to go to work. Think that one was around a 3.0. I remember there being one when I was in maybe middle school (early 90s) where there was some damage to a couple of the taller buildings downtown.

Fracking doesn't cause earthquakes

Ehrmagerd fracking. No, there isn't. I bet there was in 1811 though

Got excited over a prospect and started jumping up and down?

The New Madrid fault line doesn't get as much coverage as the San Andreas one because it is in the midwest. Statistically it is the potentially 2nd most dangerous behind San Andreas, and is likely to have a large earthquake first.
Always wondered what would happen if our country split in two.

German Town is still nice... Or least I heard it was.

None, except that due to family ties I'm here fairly often and I rather not me or said family be around when the shite hits the fan
If there was ever a bad one to hit around Memphis I can't imagine how bad the rioting/looting of the "local community" would be
And to those that were wondering about Steele I've heard nothing about any damage so I think everything should be good, just started the thread cause I'm Interested in the fault and 4.0 is the biggest I've seen in a while

Germantown thinks it's superior bc it has "nice looking" Arby's/McDonald's/etc. and all their signs have to be a ground level but really it's no better than any of the other nicer parts of the actual city of Memphis
Plus it's a great place to get a ticket

A major earthquake along the New Madrid Fault would wipe out Memphis and St. Louis, and submerge most of the southern coast of the US. Like. 9.0 quake. A quake of 8.0, like the ones in 1811, would wipe out Memphis and St. Louis and cause major damage in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Mississippi, etc.
Some simulated maps show a new coastline as far north as Birmingham, with most of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas under water.
I grew up along that fault line, there were little quakes all the time. It's very active, and just a matter of time before a major quake happens.

A 4.0?
Meh.
That's a quick rumble in these parts.
The Easter Sunday quake was the strongest one I've been through so far. It made our pool empty it's contents pretty quickly. We all felt sea sick afterwards.

Bad thing is most ppl/places aren't at all prepared for even a semi severe quake

The really bad thing will be that 90% of th structures in that area aren't built to earthquake codes.
Lots of old brick buildings, etc. shite will be a mess when you do get a big one. Especially in Memphis and STL. I think the 1811 one rang church bells in Boston, just to give you an idea. Apparently the thick bedrock layer in that part of the country won't attenuate an earthquake like the non bedrock layers out here on the coast.
It sort of acts as a conduit for the energy.
Think aluminum bat vs. wood bat.
