"I received word tonight that Coach Gregg Marshall has chosen to remain the head basketball coach at Wichita State," Tide athletic director Bill Battle said in a statement. "I fully respect his decision and wish him and his family all the best. My objective in this search is focused on one goal: to get the best person available to lead the Alabama men's basketball program. I remain determined to bring to our program a proven head coach with impressive credentials, one who understands and values our program, wants to lead our program, and is excited about what can be accomplished at the University of Alabama."

Who is running the PR department in TTown? Yall used to be the best.

What's wrong with that statement? Seems standard

I stopped making fun of Bama being turned down when they scooped up Saban. Too many times in coaching searches, they final choice is better than the original first choice.

Don't need a statement. Marshall re-upped. Move on.

The last 2/3rds are completely unnecessary. You could argue all of it is. Do Alabama fans actually give a shite what the ad has to say about whiffing? Honest question.

It's a completely standard statement.

I think OP's point is you don't acknowledge being turned down at all, just let rumors be rumors. But that ship has sailed

Most ADs don't make a statement like that. They just move on and let the actions speak for themselves.

Sadly, I think it just comes off as desperation.

It seems odd and makes Alabama look weak by coming out and talking about a coach that they tried to hire while they still don't have a coach yet. All that stuff should stay behind closed doors. No need for the public to know about it. It looks like they're catering to what their fans want to know instead of what looks good for the program, and, by admitting publicly that they were not able to hire a coach, it simply makes them look bad. I don't understand why any athletic department would feel the need to talk publicly about that. Heck, most athletic departments don't even discuss the hiring process/contract negotiations of the coaches that they do hire, let alone the ones that get away who were #1 on their board.

Whoever we hire will know they weren't our first choice.

We have to deal with this from now on in the coaching search, it's tricky.

Their thinking is it's better to just own it than to try to play it off and come off as dishonest

I don't think it (the presser itself) will affect another candidate's decision one way or the other, so it's no big deal to me

There is no basketball version of Saban out there waiting in the wings.

There are plenty of elite coaches that nobody expects to leave their current job.

AD's shouldn't be making statements letting everyone know they've lost their first choice.
