Against my better judgment I'm going to weigh in on this dumb tournament. I promise you my jimmies aren't rustled and I'm doing this as an academic exercise only.
Herschel winning is weird. His best argument is as greatest SEC player, IMO. Then greatest SEC athlete, then waaaayyyy below that, greatest SEC star.
Tim Tebow was a bigger star than Herschel. Granted there is some modernity bias in that, but still. As far as icons go, Bear is far, far bigger.

I think for the purposes of this inane tournament they had to put 'star' because "thing" or "entity" wouldn't sound as good. As a legacy to the SEC, tebow doesn't even compare to herschel for a multitude of reasons. I'm not even talking about the fact that the media is ooooooh about 1000 times more prevalent now than then.

Tim Tebow's hold on "greatest college QB" lasted 1 offseason- then CAM did his thing at AU.
Herschel still regarded as greatest college TB by all except AU fans.

Ok I see him now at the bottom. Still Kiffin, the hat, SECNetwork, Paul Finebaum and a lot of other goofy things?!
Like I said I wouldn't argue Herschel as GOAT RB but overall SEC GOAT star? He's among them but it's hard to argue he's the greatest star ever. They say all time but other than a few you have to include recency rules those brackets.
At any rate, it doesn't matter but it's fun to debate/argue.

I'm sure if the tournament were "best dual sport football and baseball players in the SEC" Bo might have edged Herschel out.

It's good to see that our football program has finally won something

Eh, maybe. Walker is a pretty low key star in my opinion. Like I said, Herschel's best claim would be in a best player ranking.

Yeah I mean his personality was low key compared to some other people maybe.

That's true. But I mean for the purposes of "star" what would make someone the biggest? A loud and boisterous personality in addition to being good?
Geez I can't believe I typed all that, it reminds of that stupid arse "who's now" segment on espn.

Is this an April fools joke?

Branding, distinctive personalty, notoriety, widespread legacy, etc. This isn't a slight to Walker, I just think of all the questions he's the answer to, this one is one of the less fitting. He's a local celebrity, revered player and certainly known to those who are either SEC folks or were interested in CFB during the time period. But he didn't have the brand that Bo did or the legacy that Bear does or the media-driven celebrity that modern guys like JFF or Tebow do.
Also, is Shaq not in there or did I miss it? He seems made for this type of discussion.

What do you object to? You think Herschel is a high profile star?
Nationwide, do you think he garners the recognition for the average person that Peyton or Bear Bryant or Shaq would?
Keep in mind this is a different question from whether I think Herschel was a high profile/elite CFB player.

Seeding gets screwed up even in fantasy brackets. Who would have thunk it??!!??

SDS is fricking terrible. Regardless, there are a handful of individuals that could take the title where I'd have no arguments.

Meh, they made a 30 for 30 about Bo and his greatness. Herschel's has one about him being traded away from a team that went on to win 3 Super Bowls and is referred to by many as the worst trade ever. He just doesn't have the following Bo has/had, deserved or not.

What? Herschel had the first SEC-centric 30 for 30 documentary. Before Bo, before Auburn-Bama, etc.
Mash and learn

SDS is like B/R these days. They have a handful of really good writers and analysts and a whole bunch of suck arse ones and lots and lots of clickbait. It's a shame too as SDS used to be really good.
I will say the guy at SDS who breaks down and analyzes plays with animated gifs and the like. Is awesome. I wish more sports writers and sites would do what he does. He not only shows you step by step how a play happens but also explains it in a way anyone can understand.
