Cal went to a F4 with UMass and would've won a title at Memphis if not for Super Nintendo Chalmers.

Am I missing something? Martin has won 14, 14, and 17 games.

He recruited better as a high school coach.

Slow your roll, Amos. He still had a conference championship the year he was fired.

I'd rank them

1a. Donovan
1b. Cal
3. Howland
4. Anderson
5. Pearl
6. Barnes
7. Stallings
8. Andy Kennedy
9. Martin
10. Fox
11. Jones
12. Billy Kennedy
13. That other Anderson

Yes, because he built the UF program to a point where it could compete and win national championships which I would rank above what Cal has done at UK. That is not to diminish what he has done, but I put more value into building a program from the ground up and then winning championships.

He didn't bring success to non-powerhouses at UMass and Memphis?

It's silly to "punish" Cal for his success because he decided to go to UK. And I'd argue that with the pressure and expectations, it's just as difficult to win. There's a lot less margin for error.

There's no doubt he is a great coach, but for me personally I can't ignore his history, he has to own that. Who you put at #1 or 2 is probably just a matter of taste, they are not only the top two in the league they are right up there for best in the country.

He didn't win titles at UMass or Memphis and I'm not punishing Cal, I was explaining why I would rank Donovan ahead of Cal even if he were to win another. Donovan faced significant pressure and expectations as well when we were trying to repeat.

Would you not agree that if Mark Stoops were to build UK into a football power and win a couple titles that that would be viewed as a more significant coaching accomplishment than if McElwain were to win a couple at UF?

I think a better ranking would be by tiers.

Tier 1
Cal, Donovan

Tier 2
Howland, Anderson, Pearl, Martin, Barnes

Tier 3
Stallings, Andy Kennedy, Fox

Tier 4
Jones, Billy Kennedy

Tier D2
Kim Anderson

Cal is a recruiter, not a coach. He can't even hold Billy's nuts. His coaching is handing out cash.

He's got a pretty good class coming in.

Oh, and Kim Anderson.

1. Calipari - Donovan is a better "coach", but Cal is the best recruiter
2. Donovan - Outstanding resume, is he bored ala Stoops at OU?

3. Pearl - Outstanding recruiter, perfect fit at AU...
4. Howland - Huge resume, huge questions
5. Anderson - Nice year, seems to be building something
6. Fox - Did a great job this year IMO
7. Stallings - Solid results at a tough place to win
8. Andy Kennedy - Question the X&O's, but he's winning
9. Barnes - The Mark Richt of college basketball
10. Martin - did he just reap the benefits of Huggin's recruits?

11. Jones - jury is out
12. Billy Kennedy - Not a fan
13. That other Anderson - Initial results: disapointing

Martin recruited Steve Blake and Udonis Haslem to play on the same HS basketball team (I think that's right). Illegally of course. But he did it.

Show me a better team that he's put together since then.

Frank Martin is overrated. He hasn't done anything at USC.

You could have said the same thing with Dawn Staley at this point in her career at USC with WBB. Where is she now?

Oh yeah, the Final Four.

Mike Anderson's year is explained by a comparison of the conference schedules. Arkansas had by far the easiest schedule. Florida was at the other extreme with the toughest schedule. With a good coach the Hogs would've been in the conference title hunt right down to the end.

Arkansas would most likely have been NIT bound again this year if they'd had even an average schedule.
