Eh. Bill Self has a pretty underwhelming tourney record versus high seeds and he's a "great coach."

As someone who has watched more Rick Barnes coached games than most of this board, I'll tell you that the Vols brought a decent stability to the program who should be able to bring in good recruits to the program. His offensive ineptitude will frustrate y'all sometimes, but overall I think it's a good hire.

Rick has been on the downside of his career for awhile now.
Dont give me the he made the tourney 16 out of 17 years bullshite either. Just cause you make the tourney every year dont mean shite if you cant make it past day one.. I couldve coached some of the teams to the tourney that he has had. The head-scratching play-calls..Cant draw up an inbounds play to save his life, etc etc..Theres just so many reasons why this hire will never work. Just wait till next bball season tenn..you will see what im talking about. Get ready for frustrating basketball games..Bookmark this..

I guarantee you I've seen Rick Barnes coach more games than you, and I'm not saying he's the best X's and O's guy. What I am saying is that he will do something for Tennessee similar to what he did for Texas, which is put the program back on the map. I think Barnes is a terrible coach, and his time at Texas was up, but Tennessee needs this type of hire right now IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Barnes took tejas to the tourney in all but 1 year? Has a Final Four and a couple more Elite Eights to go with it? Sure they've underperformed on occasion in the tourney, but that's pretty impressive.
Penders got that program started in the right direction, but before him, tejas basketball really sucked. Sure there was potential there with all of their money, but historically, it's a bad basketball school prior to Barnes and especially before Barnes/Penders. So he really deserves some credit for what he did accomplish while at tejas. The definitely are no "blue blood" program like some like to think when talking about Marshall maybe going there.
