The sunshine pumping in these last couple of pages is amazing. If we get Newman all I will be hoping for is a first round win in the NIT. Anything else and I will be ecstatic!

That said here's to a 2016 bb & fb national championship! Hail State!

Do we have some kind of in with him?

We have an in with all those guys that play with the Atlanta Celtics. McCray works out the celtics all the time. He knows all of their players really well. Simmons is the one that gets targeted for us because of the Adidas circuit which he is heavily involved in.

So we've hired one of the winningest coaches in all of the NCAA over the past nearly 20 years. Next year we have probably the most veteran team returning in the SEC plus we have an excellent shot to add a Top 5 HS player and some other additional very nice players. With all of that its sunshine pumping to believe that if we do sign Newman we can get into the NCAA tournament? Not even predicting advancement but just making it? Sunshine pumping ain't what it used to be.

This seems reasonable. It's hard not to get very excited with this turn around in the program though.

I think the NIT would be a good goal if y'all do sign Newman.

You're all a bunch of pussies with low expectations. You wouldn't be excited to only be a top 64 team in any other sport. Getting to the tournament should be the bottom of the ladder, if we sign the guys we are looking at, we are in that shite.

We honestly should make the NIT without him.

You can't predict what a bunch of HS and JUCO guys are going to do in college no matter how highly rated they are. Cal signed a bad arse class a few years ago, they didn't make the tourney and had a 1st round NIT loss to Robert Morris.

If we get Malik, he will have to be all he's touted as and fast. Sword and him will have to carry us.

My thoughts exactly. We would have a decent shot at the NIT next year without Newman AND if Ray and staff were still around. With Howland coaching and IF we add guys like Newman and Kasongo (neither of which we would get without Howland) there is NO reason why we shouldn't be able to raise our level of play enough to make the NCAA tournament field.

While there is no sure thing on predicting how a recruit will produce as a FR in college, basketball is by far the easiest sport to do that in. And we have a lot of returning pieces so its not like Malik will need to come in and carry the whole team by himself. We aren't expecting 4 or 5 freshman to all have to produce. Heck, we lost a slew of SEC games this year by less than 6 points. Wouldn't take a lot to turn a bunch of those into wins.

Howland was at or below .500 in his first year witb UCLA's players. UCLA was a tournament team 6 consecutive years prior to one losing season that got the previous coach fired, so the program was in far better shape than MSU's. Newman is a great player but essentially every team in the West outside of maybe Alabama and A&M should be better than they were last year and there may be a transition period for him.

If the narrative was Ray didn't get effort out of talented players, then I could see a big year one difference but it looked like Ray got great effort, they just aren't that talented.

I think we're going to make a big splash. It's good that everyone will still overlook us.

No troll at all, but is OM expecting to be better next season? I was thinking y'all lose Rhett, Summers, and Snoop.

I'm not going to get back into my critique of Ray but I don't think effort was nearly as much of a problem as lack of a cohesive plan on offense or least not one that our players could understand or execute. And I wouldn't put much stock in how well Howland did his first year at UCLA. Every situation and what you inherit coming in as a coach is different. This will be the most veteran team we've had at MSU in basketball in a long time.

LOL. Lavin's last UCLA team was a disaster. The tank was completely empty when he handed the keys to Howland. They were bad. They were soft. They didn't hustle.

Ole Miss is losing about 1/2 of their scoring and minutes from the 5 seniors on the team. Kennedy uses a lot of players, so the impact of losing that much probably isn't as great as it would be for other teams.

Looking at what they are losing I think Ole Miss will probably have a slight drop off.
