quote:100% ? Anyone that buys a gallon of milk, puts gas in their car, buys a car tag, owns property, or pays an income tax.
What percentage of Mississippi Residents pay taxes?

Those first serveral examples are poor at best. So you're saying that a tourist passing through that buys gas or a drink at a convenience store owns my alma mater as much as I do?
I think not.
And you can't be as naive to think that 100% of people pay taxes?

Sales tax accounts for 40% of our revenue and income tax accounts for 30%.

That just proves my point even more... If those numbers are correct.
Just because you pay sales tax has absolutely nothing to do with owning a in state public school.
Income tax would be a better representation but even that has holes.
Point being that all people that pay taxes in Mississippi do not own my alma mater, period.

Does any taxpayer deserve anything less than the best oversight possible to make sure that our public universities are run as efficiently as possible? Take a pragmatic approach to all of this rather than an emotional look.

The point is that not all of the people paying into sales tax are actual voting for these officials, as they could be just going through the state or tourists or whatever example you want, and as you said the majority of revenue coming into the state is from this sales tax.
So someone who doesn't vote for the officials on the oversight board, generally doesn't give a shite about our universities or their oversight, but does pay into the highest revenue stream of our state somehow "owns" the university just as much as the alumni and students that attended? Even if their contribution individually is nowhere near what we've given?

Y'all are just arguing goofy semantics now. You don't own one brick at Ole Miss. If you do, go take out a mortgage on it as collateral. Belongs to the public does not imply someone owns something. I am tired of this topic.

You're not even trying to see our point.
So you think that someone that is a resident of Arizona, passes through Mississippi on I-10, stops and gets a tank of gas and a coke, has anything to do with how our state funded public schools are run, and has some claim to the ownership of those same schools?
Come on man. I said I agreed with a large part of your assessment. The least you could do is acknowledge that we have a point.

Public School is public property by law.

Yes I believe that has already been covered.

Actually I bought a brick on the walk of champions
Btw, where did I disagree with the ownership part of your argument?

I gots a brick at Davis Wade.
I didn't disagree with his point that the taxpayers own the public schools either. I don't remember anyone disagreeing actually. I said that it "troubled me".

quote:Well, from a purely argumentative standpoint, they actually do and could. All of our public schools get federal funds. We take in more than we send in and I am sure some of that comes from Arizona.

I see it as a shareholders in a corporation type situation. Yeah, that grandfather (ie traveler passing through MS) bought five shares in the company for each of his grandchildren "so they learn the value of investment", but does he really have as much power and insight into the every day operations of the company as the true investors that have bought huge chunks of shares (i.e. your donors/alumni) that care much more about how the company performs? I don't think so. He technically has a vote, but it's meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
But again, I do see the merits of your argument.

Diamondawg, I applaud your effort in teaching civic class today. I just didn't want it to go unnoticed.
