So my fiancée has decided that she wants to get a dog (female). We live in an apartment and I work a lot in the oil and gas industry so its not like I will be home a whole lot. Any breeds you could suggest that aren't super needy as far as running around a lot etc. Basically a good breed of dog for an apartment. No little yappy frickers though. No Chihuahua or Pomeranian types. I need to keep some of my dignity.

Thanks in advance for the help/suggestions.

Border Collies are great dogs but you gonna have to walk it if you're in an apartment

That's what I wanted, apartment has a 90lb limit. I guess I should have included that tidbit of info in the OP.

Great Dane was for sure my first choice when she asked though.

Well, the best breed in the world is out. Boxers have too much energy for apartments.

West HighlandbTerrier maybe?

Walking it regularly would not be an issue, I just don't want to get a dog that's meant to be herding, hunting, etc. and make it miserable cooped up in an apartment.

Doberman

She'll love it because it's beautiful and friendly and loyal. Smart, low maintenance, and it will make her feel safe. Extremely protective. You'll like it too

Eta: our Dobes maxed out at about 65 lbs

Etaa: our Doberman stays crated most of the day. We let her out at the end of the day. She doesn't get antsy or bored, she doesn't chew or whine, she loves her crate.

How heavy do they get? Friend has 2 and they are awesome dogs. Thought they got heavy. I know they don't get fat but just tall etc.

About 65. I added some more info on my post

Ours is pure European. The Americans are actually mixed with Great Dane so they're bigger

I will check them out. That's what I was looking for, an apartment dog that isn't a girly dog. Thanks genro.

Kept a big Doberman for a friend years ago -- dog weighed 100 lbs legit. Most graceful, athletic dog Ive ever had. We lived in an apt and he was amazingly careful in the small space, but we took him out to run a lot. Great dog -- just make sure if you get onw, it isn't an idiot bred dog. Unfotunately, some have bread Dobermans without brains

After today's WYHI threads, I got all tingly feeling inside and I clicked this thread expecting a story about a female-female sexual encounter.

Disappoint.

Get a Decker Terrier. Perfect family dog. Loyal, quiet and clean (your wife will like that characteristic). Very few health issues and lives 18-20 years. Medium sized dog. Very protective of women and children. Happy indoors but loves long walks.
Rescues are great. They are very adaptable.

get a yorkie mixed with a calmer dog. Yorkie's are sweet dogs who rarely shed, make excellent watch dogs, and are fairly adept at killing vermin and stealing your socks, but can be yappie and high-strung. Mixing one with a calmer, larger breed can make for a great dog. My Yorkie mix is a fantastic little dog. Great personality, very loving, and very smart.
