Nice. Good to be reminded of true sportsmanship and see the support for those youth.

Honestly "we won't play unless fan show up and cheer for the other team" is one of the most participation trophy society things that I've heard in a while. Those two prep school nerds wouldn't even be able to make a team for gym class at a public HS

The utter ruination of America. Twisted liberal pansies and feel good social engineering do not belong in competetive sports- leave that to the public schools and Obama.

Oh damn... this is the SEC rant- sorry, thought I was on the Poli Board.

Great story. We all need community. It gave these kids a brief glimpse. Sports can be that conduit for many in their situation if they are lucky enough to have the right influences.

ETA: I did not see Bowl Jackson's post before I posted... I promise

I disagree. And I'm all about squelching the modern American "soccer mom" pussificationness to which you allude. They weren't attempting to lose a ballgame. They just wanted the other kids to for once enjoy some crowd noise. Totally different thing.

In fact, giving them the advantage of some crowd and then attempting to beat them anyway was taking on an unnecessary challenge. I don't see a problem here.

Nobody should have to! He missed the point entirely.

It pisses me off to no end seeing local private schools get same or better coverage than the public schools, but this transcends that. Very classy move by that team.

The story didn't tell. Had to google. Vanguard, the prep school, won 67-33. They were up 37-15 at the half and 58-24 at the end of the third quarter. Either team scored 9 points in the 4th. (So there's you're "holding back", those of you who wanted this to be about 21st Century anti-competition bullshitology).

Vanguard's final record was 25-5. The Gainesville kids were 1-13 on the season.

I worked at one of those State Schools one summer when I was 20. Same state, different school. The story mentioned that at Gainesville boys are allowed to play on the team as a reward for good behavior. I can almost guarantee you that the team personell was markedly different week to week. I hate to say it, but those 45 year-olds who work for $9/hour at State Schools don't look the other way too much. It's more like, "Look at me cross-eyed, you little bastards, and I'll get you. Let me get in my 8 hours without making me lose my mind." Those kids are getting ramrodded 24/7 from every angle.

Wow. The entire situation just seems condescending to me now and a little self righteous on the part of the prep academy. There's no shot clock in Texas so there's no reason to win by more than 30 points.

Aw, come on, man! Some of y'all are saying they pussed out and now you're saying they ran up the score! I think they just played their game. They were a playoff team. They went 25-5! They did the right thing in both regards. Like I said they held themselves back to 9 points in the 4th.

If they'd just beaten them without providing the applause factor they would have been elitist priveleged assholes.

Now they're condescending elitist assholes?

The problem we all live with, in a nutshell. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Meh. I've reffed plenty of high school soccer games where one team fewer than a handful of fans.

Good story.
There is still a little compassion left in people.
Win at all costs is usually from bad parenting or bad fans.
Life lessons are learned from playing organized sports.
We can't forget these are teenagers.
Good for hope, I'm all for it.
