Call it evil, call it morally bankrupt, call it illegal, but I never understand when people call groups such as Al-Queda, ISIS, etc cowards.

There is nothing cowardly about blowing yourself up or throwing everything else in your life away in order to participate in life-threatening activities. Its batshit crazy, but not cowardly. A coward would never put themselves in those siruations

When you plan on dying and you're getting 72 virgins that's not exactly brave. Their goal is to die

Bravery would be going into a situation where you didn't know if you would live or die

Because they mostly prey on innocent civilians and stay away from any real threat.

They "hide" behind Islam the same way soldiers "hide" behind the military.

That argument makes no sense.

Soldiers go to war even though they want to stay alive.

These guys don't want to stay alive.

I think calling them cowards dangerously undersells their threat.

A coward will fold when pressure is applied. Radical muslims will take this to the death. We would do well in not minimizing them in such ways.

Because of what they typically do. They bomb mosques filled with innocent and defenseless worshipers, conduct drive by shootings, hijack planes and ram them into civilian buildings, plant roadside IEDs and pelt bases with mortars and rockets. Nothing about their tactics is brave, they are cowards through and through.

The few ones that you view as "brave" for conducting suicide attacks are usually so doped up on drugs or brainwashed by a radical interpretation of their religion that I would hardly call it "brave".

No. The average "terrorist" is a lazy POS. He sits around all day smoking opium or fricking little boys and then occasionally gets together with his buddies to launch a rocket at a FOB. They're not brave and they're not dedicated.

When you're sneaking into a soft target not in uniform and targeting non-combatants, you're a coward.

I think we as a spciety just cant bring ourselves to consider the possibility that these people are more invested in a cause than most of us are. Its much easier to dismiss them as cowards than to face the reality that we are facing an ideology in which the believers are moe devoated to than we are to our beliefs and way of life.

A coward doesnt follow through the way members of ISIS do.

They hide within civilian populations, do not wear uniforms, cover their faces when on camera, etc.

The soldiers you impugn do none of that.

Being batshit crazy does not equal "brave", either.

I don't classify them as cowards because I don't even think of these savages in those terms. I'll not spend one moment trying to disabuse a single poster of his notion that they ARE cowards, however.

The cause seems full of silliness to me.

More invested isn't bravery.

A white collar criminal is totally committed to what he's doing. He may even work at that white collar crime harder than some people work at their job. It doesn't redeem their criminality because they "believe in" what they're doing nor because they're "devoted" to it.

Pedophiles can be really devoted to what they're doing. But they're fricking kids. So we rightly say they're debased cowards.

Terrorists are killing innocents for religious/political purposes. The fervency of their belief doesn't redeem their actions nor is it a point of moral strength. It's misguided and twisted morality that asserts what they're doing is righteous.
