Should we get rid of the second term and just go with 8 years?

Why do we even have a second term if we're going to just reelect shitty presidents? Would it be better to just elect presidents for 1 8 year term?

Reagan beat Carter.

Obama was vulnerable last election, but Romney wasn't the politician to knock him off. Romney is indeed a very bright guy and has a history of effective administration, but his campaign wasn't up to snuff against the Obama machine.

FWIW I do believe congressional terms should be longer. The two year turn around means they have to play for short term goals and be constantly raising money. Being worried about ideological purity to not get primaries and the constant need for funds does not good government make.

God no, if we elect worse than Obama I'd rather the country have the option to correct its mistake in 4 years rather than 8.

Now, if the country is too stupid to correct its mistake (possible) then there's nothing that can be done. Shitty people elect shitty leaders.

Aside from the money part, that's pretty much how it was designed to work. The house, with it's short terms is the more reactionary body whereas the senate with 6 year terms is supposed to be more reserved.

Lengthening the terms won't do anything to change the dynamic of pandering to the base and constantly fundraising.

Term limits are what's needed. 4 for congress (8 years) and 2 for senate (12 years). If you put those limits in place, nobody's going to view the position as a lifetime career option and thus have more freedom to sometimes go against their base. Further, nobody will spend 30+ years in office and be so powerful everyone feels the need to pay them off.

No ... we should shorten it, and force them to undergo confidence votes every two years in the process. Give the power back to the Congress instead of just one man.

Obama has really fricked-things-up for future Presidents. Badly.

I'm not sure you understand how politics work... but alas, I'll ask. How has Obama messed it up for other presidents?

The US, as a nation, is full of great ideas, ideals, and is built on a strong foundation.

The US, as a country, is full of shitty people.

I think it would blunt it some. Some being the key word. The two year term means you're already running for office again once your term starts. There's no room for anything but all pandering all the time. This though is also a function of gerrymandering. It's never the other side that's going to knock you out, it's getting taken out from your right or left in a primary.

There's no room for any compromise to possibly do anything effective.

The incentive will be to take as much money as you can in those limited terms and play the same games to get re-elected. Then when out of office, you go to the lobbying game to throw funds at the new crop trying to make as much as possible.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on term limits, but there are possible pitfalls to consider.

While I agree on your premise, in practice, it's like taking the loaded pistol away from a toddler only to give it to a group of 1st graders.

idk

I mean, a president in his first term spends 2 of the 4 years gearing up for campaigning an then campaigning. Half of his 1st term is dedicated to getting reelected. I think it's a flawed system.
