For those schools which recognize them...

I feel that it can be broken down onto four main pieces:
1. Proximity
2. Longevity
3. Balance
4. Defining Moments

Doing some soul-searching since the subject of identifying LSUs rival is of such conflict.

Seems to me that not a single school satisfies each aspect.

Thoughts?

I would post about that, but it isn't needed. One need only look at the diarrhea all over the front page of this board posted by LSU fans to find their real rival.

Ole Miss is my best guess, but there just hasn't been the balance necessary, I feel.

Hopefully Freeze has y'all on the up-and-up because I think everything else is there.

We can only hope. It makes college football better to have our game be as important as it was in '03. At least for us anyways.

Yeah, I mean, Alabama is the game I circle on the calendar every year. But I hate them because they beat us... the Saban angle has pretty much lost its luster.

Y'all I hate because I just do.

On another note, what is the bigger game for y'all, the Magnolia (lol) Bowl or the Egg Bowl?

I agree that proximity is important because every school wants a "sphere of influence" so, the closer the rival the more intense the rivalry.

I don't think longevity is important at all. The Kentucky Legislature ordered UK and Louisville to start playing in the 90s and the rivalry instantly became white hot.

Balance isn't that important either. Georgia has a commanding lead over USC in football but when the Cocks got Spurrier, the rivalry flared up because Carolina started beating the Dawgs regularly.

Defining Moments? Yeah, that can make one fan base start hating another. Again, though, proximity is important here. For example, UConn has beaten UK twice in the Final Four in the past four years, yet few Cat fans feel that a rivalry exists. If it had been Ohio State or West Virginia, however, there would be a lot of hard feelings.

I think the most important characteristics of a rivalry are:

Proximity
Similar strength of the programs
Defining moments

Admittedly I haven't been in SC since Spurrier was hired, but back then nobody gave two shits about Georgia if you put them up with Clemson.

rivalry to me is the team you love beating the most and hate losing to the worst...also a rival is a team that you will never pull for against any other team...unless by ur rival winning it directly benefits your team. under this criteria i believe lsus rival is alabama. handsdown end of discussion period.

I love beating LSU, I hate losing to State. Pretty sure its the same for yall with Bama and us.

And I actually don't mind the "Magnolia Bowl" name, needs a better trophy though. So shitty.

well then maybe thats why lsu doesnt have a true rival...or maybe we have several. bc our frickin older fanbase disagrees with the younger fanbase. i guarantee you that any younger lsu fan looks at alabama as our rival...and that includes the players that play on our teams right now. do you agree with that? what team do you think les miles and the football players are chomping at the bit to play next year and beat more than any other team?

I don't think its a rivalry in the "classic" sense. If yall both weren't good at the same time, would you still truly hate Bama? I wouldn't think so, but I'm not a LSU fan. With Ole Miss, I think yall hate the frick out of us, even when, over the past 15 years, we haven't been all that great.

I'm 26. Alabama and LSU are nothing more than conference rivals. Just like AU, MSU, and Arky.

OM and aTm are LSU's rivals. DWI

This. The only some reason LSU fans "hate" Bama is because of Saban and 2011.

For me, it's LSU. I hate losing to State, but I love beating LSU. I don't know where my Rebal brethren lie with that one but for me, our main rival is LSU and it's not close.
