Theres a good bait shop at chimney creek just over the bridge where you could check in about the better spots. I fish and shrimp the creeks so im not much help. If you need to rent gear you can get it up my the pier like deerpig said

Stop in Bowie seafood on the left by the first Chu's you come to. my cousin owns it. theyre names are Jamie and her husband is Don. theyre great people and sell bait also. say her cousin Jason said to ask. theyll tell you whatever you need to know. and probably drink beer with you

Get yourself a crab pot then and tie it off the pier... or better yet, find a creek. Then when you get back to the house, boil them and make your kids do the dirty work of peeling them while you take a nap in a hammock. Then get up, melt some butter and pair with an ice cold Budweiser.

Then you are in luck, just like the GON guys said. Should be covered up with whiting.

Pretend you are crappie fishing and use small pieces of shrimp on small hooks. Whiting like the wash created by breakers. There are usually two sets of breakers. I've always had best luck at the second set closer to the beach. You'd be surprised how close the whiting are, most people are standing on them when they cast out.

Whiting have razor sharp gill plates that will slice you wide open if you handle their gills. Get some gloves.

As I already said, the birds will steal your bait, and they will also steal your whiting.

My experience on Tybee is very limited, but I've surf fished a lot in Charleston and the surf is very similar.

Jefferson's crab idea is great too.

Chef, what's the lowdown on the creek side pier?

Ive fished there plenty with very little success. I always figure its because of the shrimp boats docking right across the creek and all the shite they dump over the sides. If you dont catch it between tides the current can be crazy in that little inlet too

People LOVE fishing that Ft.Pulaski bridge and do well there. alot of my friends walk a little up the river bank from there and find spots for chairs and post up all day. that'd be my spot if i didnt have a jon boat

That chimney creek boat launch pier youre talking about, or ft.pulaski would be way more ideal for the crab idea too

Lots of sheep head off the Back River fishing pier (public dock to locals) ... sharks too. If you're into crabbing its not too shabby. There is NO sun cover and its concrete so its hot as hell.

When I had motor trouble with mine in Charleston, and wanted to stay close to the ramp, I realized that you can slay the trout, redfish, and flounder right there around the shrimp boat docks.

They stack there waiting for their afternoon feeding. Excellent crabbing too, but you couldn't leave a trap there because rules and such, but you could toss it over the side while fishing and when you were ready to move, you just pull it up like an anchor and there's usually crab in it.

Something else I found out is that pinfish (aka Sailor's Choice) are thick too, and you can pretend you are bream fishing with pieces of shrimp on little hooks cast right up on the dock poles and tear them up... good in the crab trap and the offshore fishermen would pay money for them for grouper bait.

The good old days when I was single and living on the coast, without jack shite to do but ease my shitty little jon boat into Shem Creek and drink Miluakee's Best all day.

You should take your jon boat out there to those docks and document your experience here so that I can vicariously live through you. Not the heroin part though.

Thanks for all the input guys. I've had a post up on GON for about two weeks now and have gotten no where near the excellent info as I have gotten here..
Chef..I'll definitely be dropping by your cousins place for bait and info, and thanks for putting names to places where I'll know where to start.
Deeprig..Thanks for the extra info on what gear I'd need to use to target those whiting the guys on GON told me would be running that time of year and also about the gill plate issue.
Jeff...I'm gonna have to read up on the regs but you've bout talked me into trying some crabbing....Is there a place there to rent or purchase a trap?
tybeebomb.....a mess of Sheephead would be sweet, I've heard they taste excellent but are difficult to catch...Back river pier....is it off limits to visitors?
Thrill....I'll be sure to hit up North beach....keep the info coming... cant wait to get there

back river pier is public. I've never fished it, but I know it's public.

Sheepshead use their human-like teeth to eat barnacles off pilings and jetties, etc. That's their primary food, which is why they are difficult to catch. Their second favorite food is fiddler crabs. Jig them up and down vertically right along the pilings... when you feel a nibble, stop the jigging and count to 5 Mississippi and set the hook hard.

Any walmart near the coast. Bait shops too. Since you will be on bank or pier, it's pretty simple. Best bait is dead fish and fish guts/carcass. Contrary to popular belief, fresher is better than half-rotted.

There are two types. What I call the "string kind" and what I call "traps".

For piers/bridges I'd go with the "string" kind. It sits flat on the bottom with some bait tied in the middle, and every 5 minutes or so you pull it up. The retreive process converts it to a basket, making it harder for the crabs to escape. These are usually pretty cheap and more fun ... give you something to check every 5 minutes while you are fishing.

The cage kind are what I would recommend if you had a dock you were renting, or if you had a boat, you could throw it out somewhere with a marker buoy and pick it up on your way back to the ramp.

Otherwise, the "net" kind is probably what you want. They can be a bitch in current though. A little current is good, spreads the bait scent and attracts more crab. Too much current just gets it snagged up in all kinds of nonsense.

ETA- "string" "Net" "Basket" all interchangeable terminology for the above pictured type of trap.

There's another method of crabbing too... THe 'Purist' method. It's kind of like how fly-fisherman look down their noses at spinning-rreel bait-plunkers.

Purist Crabbing Gear list: A roll of kite string with a chicken neck tied to one end.

Total cost for both items: approximately one dollar and 37 cents.

(This method works best though only if you have access to some free labor... such as your kids, maybe a niece or nephew would work, etc.)

Just tie a neck to the end of the string then sling it out into the water. Then sit down in your chair, open a beer, let the chicken neck sit for a while....... and then slowly start dragging it in. But, don't drag it straight in. INstead let it sit still every now and then.

The crabs will follow the chicken neck in biting off small pieces as they go, and then when it reaches shallow water, you have your Labor Force waiting shin-deep with their little hand-held minnow nets....and they scoop the crab up and put it in a bucket for you.

Man, you don't even have to get out of your chair.

This was my primary method of land-crabbing off the Pitt St Bridge ruins in Charleston. But I used turkey necks.

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WJCL) — Tybee officials are gearing up for one of the biggest annual events to hit the island each year.

Orange Crush dates have been set for Tybee Island.

The annual spring break event that brings thousands of (black) college students to the island will be the weekend of April 16 through April 18.

Tybee Island city leaders said they’re prepared for the thousands of extra beach-goers they anticipate coming to the event.

“We want these people on our island. We don’t want to put a ban on it,” Mayor Pro Tem Wanda Doyle said. “All we ask is that you come out here and everybody treats everybody with respect.”

As a result, 100 police officers will be on call on Tybee Island that weekend. Chatham Emergency Management Agency will also have their mobile command center next to the the pier.

Watch out bro.

Also, I had to add the word "black" because this news outlet is too chickenshit to say the word "black".

let me be the first to call bullshite on that. And not from a "we don't want black people here" perspective but from a "every year Tybee becomes a shite show during orange crush" perspective.

quote:

This year, Hosti is hiring two security guards to police his property on Saturday because he only wants customers in the small lot.He also hopes the guards will deter petty crimes that cost him an estimated $1,100 last year, even though he closed the store three hours early. The storeowner said last year he found six separate boxes of Tampax opened, with a few tampons missing from each. People took bites out of fruit and snacked from jars of pickles while they shopped, then didn't pay, he said. Security cameras caught people flashing. Broken beer bottles littered the parking lot.
Just stuff like that all over the place.

The good news is if you just set yourself up close to the surf you'll have a good 20 yards or so of undisturbed space

Thats just great.I had hoped it wouldnt be so crowded when I chose those dates. The one day I spent on Tybee it seemed more like a laid back community than a college spring break party town.
