“Could Kentucky compete with any team in the NBA this year?” Patrick asked.
“Uh, no,” Wall said. “I don’t think so.”
“If I put them against the Sixers, would Kentucky make it a game?” Patrick wondered.
“We lost to the Sixers,” Wall cracked. “We lost to the Sixers, so I don’t know.”
Indeed. And around the time of that loss, there were jokes.
“Okay, Kentucky against the Wizards?” Patrick tried.
“No,” Wall said.
“They have no chance?” Patrick asked.
“Nah, because the NBA game is totally different,” Wall said.

Good. Most normal people should be perplexed as to how some college kids who don't have the resources, training, etc as an NBA team (even a shitty one) could compete with them.

No different than 2012 Alabama playing the 2012 Bucs. Alabama would lose badly.

Just to slightly play devil's advocate, it could be somewhat POSSIBLE in basketball, as well as baseball. Football, there is a less than 0% chance, it would be impossible.
Basketball...5 guys, non-contact, who knows..it would take all 5 pros having their worst game ever and all 5 college guys playing out of their minds.
BUT, to sum up, no I don't think it would ever really happen. Maybe once in a couple hundred tries...maybe.

Good. Cause anybody who competed at a higher level than high school at any sport knows these are ALWAYS absurd comparisons. Football, basketball, soccer, tennis, badminton, whatever.

If you gave a team 100 tries, they could do it once. The strategy would just be to jack up threes and hope you were hot one night. Most games, you would lose by 30, but that one game would be magical. Just like in the NCAA tournament, it is possible for a vastly inferior teams to beat a great one (15 vs. 2). It just takes an incredible shooting night from one team combined with a terrible one from the other.

FWIW I'd consider being competitive more than that off chance that one time out of a hundred that they could possibly win.

Agree. I don't think it would happen, but I do think basketball would be the most likely.

I wouldn't necessarily call basketball non contact.

Chaminade beat the Ralph Sampson Virginia team.
That was a NAIA team beating a top Division 1 team.
UK beating a bad NBA could happen 1 out of 20 times.

what I meant was that with football it's mano e mano, you could be looking at a 35 year old grown arse man with 10+ years NFL experience going up against a 21 year old. An NFL team would just physically overpower, dominate, and manhandle college kids. Basketball you're not matched up like that.

I played baseball at a decent JUCO program. Played at a state championship caliber high school program. Just the difference in level of play between JUCO and very good high school baseball is a large jump. As Wall said, its a different game. It's more intense. It's the same with baseball. Everybody has pitchers that throw 90... not just a few - and this is JUCO ball.
It's also why I laugh at people claiming college baseball in a league like the SEC is subpar. We're still talking about the top 2% of high school baseball players.

Kentucky would be destroyed by any NBA team. The whole idea is so incredibly stupid I find it hard to believe anyone really believes this.

Um, yes, it's completely different. We are talking about 9 1st-2nd round quality players, never has Alabama had an entire team of 1st round guys. You can't compare the two sports.

Do you know how much talent was on the 2011-2012 Alabama teams, when this was being thrown about? Enough to ask Pete Carroll the question in a press conference.

Kentucky has a starting 5 of first round talent. There weren't anywhere near 22 first rounders on that team.

Basketball and football aren't exactly comparative sports. But Alabama's entire 2011 defense is in the NFL and either starting or a major contributor. The entire 2012 offensive line is on a two deep in the NFL. There were 9 total first round picks on those teams.

That all said, I'm willing to bet majority of the them are stronger and faster after spending time in an NFL training program that doesn't have the restrictions like you do in college.
It's the same with basketball. Look at the difference in Anthony Davis' strength from when he was at UK to his first year in the NBA.
ETA: Either way, the UK vs. NBA should've been a moot point after their Bahamas trip anyway. Those national team guys are typically guys who are no longer playing in the NBA or didn't make it from overseas. And all of those games were competitive and they lost to the Dominican National team who was the best of the bunch by a long shot.
