Elliot Spiller wins the SGA presidency
He is the first black student to be elected since 1976. And the first non-machine backed candidate to win since 1986.

I would like to apologize to Cleo Thomas for the Oxford kids destroying your campaigns signs in 1999. They had nothing to do for fun except destroying your signs.

How do you know it's "progress" if there has never been anyone not affiliated with the machine? What if this new guy sucks?

Because it shows that the students actually give a frick about the SGA. The main reason why the machine backed candidates won every year was mainly due to the apathetic nature of the independent students who outnumber the Greeks (even though it doesn't feel like the greeks are in the minority here).
This election was different. You could feel it. People actually gave a shite this year. Different frats and sororities were given Spiller their support, and even a few football players like Amari and Kenyan endorsed him. I don't know if this was the largest voter turnout here at UA, but was definitely one of the more important elections.

This is damn good stuff, CT. Kudos to y'all!
Good luck to Spiller

Only because he's black....period
No one on campus, and I mean no one, gives a flip about the student president.

Good for him....but does it really matter?
I know we had things like this at mizzou, and once they were elected, there was never anything else I heard about it.
As for "The Machine," it seems like everyone has their own support network. It SEEMS like at Alabama, the Greek students happen to band together, which last time I checked, was fine?
Politics can get brutal, and isnt for the faint of heart.

I don't think anyone is saying The Machine is inherently bad. All it is is a voting bloc, though individual members were free to vote for whomever they wanted. It was almost always The Machine backed candidate. The Machine backed candidate winning almost always won because of apathy with the general student body, moreso than The Machine itself.
This doesn't seem like a big deal to people not familiar with Alabama, but to those that go and went to Alabama, it's a pretty huge deal. Read last night there was turnout of almost 15,000 students. That is mind blowing to someone like me that went to Bama when there were only around 18,000 students and the only ones that ever voted were Machine members.
