List would be meaningful if Georgia Tech was 1 and Mississippi State was 1 in 2014

Yeah Texas game wasn't good. I remember. But that 83 team was a helluva football team that I believe would have found a way to win any game by the end of the season. Wasn't always pretty, but they were hard-nosed.
Doesn't matter tho - no way to prove they were best now

Miami won it all b/c Tom Osborne wanted to win the Orange Bowl in order to be the undefeated and undisputed champ. They went for two in the Orange Bowl when tying it up would have assured them at least a piece of the title. The conversion failed and the upset was impressive enough to voters that Miami jumped Auburn.

Miami was #5 and lucked out to play #1 Nebraska in a home game because #2 Texas had to play in the Cotton, #3 Auburn had to play in the Sugar, and #4 Illinois had to play in the Rose.

the luck was Osborne wanting to get that title with a win instead of taking the almost assured title w/the tie.

#5 got to host #1 in a home game instead of the other way around.

AU did not lose the NC due to the TX Game. Miami jumped from the #5 spot because everyone thought Neb was unbeatable. Pat Dye's failure to understand the PR behind the college ranking, prevented him from opening the playbook against Michigan. AU had played 8 teams in the top 15 that year.

No. The sportswriter made up their mind before the Orange Bowl that Miami vs. Nebraska was the Natl Title game. They had whined for years about the bowl tie-ins not matching up 1 vs 2. Think for a moment about the sheer stupidity of those days, when the likes of Phillip Marshall, Pawl, etc, decided who got the Natty.

The problem then, was Bowl tie-ins by the leagues.

If that were so, then the sportswriters would've had Nebraska at No. 1 entering the Orange Bowl (like they did), and Miami No. 2.

And the Georgia fan with the 10 to 9 reference made me very, very sad.
