How did Arkansas get so good at football by the end of last season?

Almost beat Miss. St. and destroyed LSU and Ole Miss. Won their bowl game I think. I honestly don't remember as the LSU/Ole Miss wins are all that I really remember about that team.

But, what led to the turnaround that enabled those two big wins?

Will Arkansas football continue in that trajectory and get even better this next year?

Was just thinking about the upcoming LSU-Arky basketball game and then remembered how good Arkansas was at football this past year at the end and was wondering what happened.

Because they have a really really good coaching staff. People shat all over Bret, but he assembled a staff of like minded guys who all know how to implement his way of doing things. They get the most out of their players. Really good thing going on up at AR imo.

Defense.

No, really, defense.

Our DC finally was able to put the right pieces in the puzzle. We were oh so close for a couple of games there. Honestly LSU caught us right when we put it all together.

Our defense was ridiculous in the second half of the season

It was very good. And, you caught LSU after the let down of a loss against Alabama. I knew there was no chance that LSU would win that game. None. Perfect timing for Arkansas.

Then LSU comes back and beats A&M, which I also predicted, because that team wasn't losing 3 in a row. Emotion is such a huge component in CFB.

But, Arky was definitely better when they played LSU.

They got to play 2 games at home against 2 teams that had higher aspirations for the season who had their seasons ended just the week before. They wanted both games more than LSU and Ole Miss and it showed

Defense, defense, defense.... note that the only game we lost in that stretch was to Mizzou when our QB got hurt and, for whatever reason, we went into full air raid offense. Even though our QB couldn't throw the ball any more.

Mizzou didn't blink and put the boots to us. God willing our new OC won't be so prone to panicking late in the game.

Extremely important to a coaching staff. Not having this was a large reason that Chizik failed at Auburn.

I really like Robb Smith. He has done an incredible job turning around the Arky defense. The two shutout wins in a row was incredible, even though one of them was against such a terrible LSU offense.

You forgot them taking Bama to the wire 14-13 I think

They may go 4-4 or 8-0, but make no mistake they are dangerous and will be a tough game for everybody.

The end of that game was terrible

Chaney went back to his old habits, and Brandon should've definitely been pulled out

He is right, but it doesn't take anything away from Arkansas. They were nails that game. LSU just gave up by the end. Worst beat down since 21-0 and gave the same feeling.

Also, Miles refused to change QBs, though I doubt it would have mattered too much.

Not really that impressive, Arky lost to MIZZOU late in the season and MIZZOU lost to IU so that would mean Arky sucks worse than IU, transitive property works in this example.

I'd love to replay that game with Vadal and Porter in the lineup.. even with the post-Bama hangover.

18 carries. 49 yards.

I agree with everything said. For all the talk of our running game, it was our defense that won the games. We should have a formidable defense again this year, but the loss of Flowers, Spraight and Philon is gonna hurt.

And yea, we wanted it more. The media was saying all year that we'd eventually win a SEC game by double digits and time was running out. I also think LSU and Ole Miss let the cold weather psyche them out a little, because that really shouldn't have been an issue for them.

Texas was just over-matched.
