quote:

One knock on Steele in the past is that his scheme has been too complicated. Most consider that the biggest reason he was fired at Clemson, with it becoming clear that his defensive players were playing slower as a result of confusion with their responsibilities. This spring will likely be heavy on installation, and how quickly the LSU players grasp the changes could determine how successful that unit is in Steele’s first year.

Many expect Steele eventually wants to go to a true 3-4 eventually, but that’s not likely to happen in 2015. LSU has the personnel for a 4-3 after years of recruiting specifically to that scheme

There will be something that carries over from the Chavis regime to Steele’s. According to several people I’ve spoken to, Steele does plan to keep the Mustang package in LSU’s defense.

Sounds like there will be a lot to pickup and the personnel you have don't yet fit the scheme he wants if he's planning to change. Are you concerned the defense could be weak in these transition years?

Not at all. Steele will mold his scheme to maximize the elite talent LSU has on defense

This actually isn't a real concern for me because I think LSU puts some of the best talent on the field defensively. Biggest concern would be what I bolded.

I'd rather run a 3-4 TBH and again, think LSU has the talent to do so.

YOu need good LB play in a 3-4 and I think LSU would not benefit from incorporating it this year, although I think there are a couple of hybrid DBs on the team who could possibly play that role.

Nope, Steele and Coach O have pumped new life into LSU.

Thank you.

and if LSU has a top 3 SEC defense will you say it's due to talent? What if they make a shift to the 3-4 and still have success?

Scheme? No. Steele won't be able to change much this year. Too many players fit the old scheme.

Play calling? Absolutely. He's been awful at play calling and game planning in his career.

Somewhat. We need larger linebackers to implement his scheme and other than Beckwith and Garrett we are kind of lacking the ideal sized linebackers. Excited about the dline play though.

I agree with this but also think you really just need elite talent/ball hawk type players. There is a lot of versatility in the 3-4.

I was wondering which one in the funky bunch was going to come up with the response thread.

Not nearly as much as aggots should be.

How is this a response thread? It's a pretty straightforward question about your defense and football, I actually saw the original article on an A&M board.

You haven't been listening. Steele was interviewed last week on the radio and we're essentially keeping most of the scheme intact. I think we'll run some different pressure packages, and a change in teaching philosophy for our Front 7 will emphasize more disruption as opposed to gap control from the Front 4.

Most of our blitzing came from the Secondary later in the game. Early it came from the A-Gap. We'll still see both but we might mix it up a little more.

But the 40 front isn't going anywhere. Orgeron coaches it very well and we've got the horses to do it. Beyond that, when compared to the Linebacking core, we don't have the same talented depth there when compared to the DL.

You can listen to Steele detail about how he won't be changing much up schematically if you want. I'll link it if you wanna listen and aren't just trolling.

But to answer the main question here, no. I've thought LSU had the ability to switch to a 3-4 for a long time. There's a reason why Bama and a plethora of NFL teams use it. You can get very creative with the blitz.

I also think we have a sizable enough nose to run the 3-4 since it requires him taking on multiple blockers.

I'm at work and can't listen. I only saw this article as far as your scheme goes which was why I asked.

I do worry about Louisiana producing the LB talent to run a 3-4. I've also heard that Steele's system caused some paralysis by analysis while at Clemson. I am a little bit concerned but I think Steele will do fine here.
