Nirvana was good but not at the level of say, Alice N Chains so I agree on the extra fame bump thanks to C Cobain.. It's the perfect story. Rock n Roll, drugs, love possible murder / suicide.

I want to add U2 to the list. They used to be ok but they haven't made good music since the first Bush administration and Bono is terrible.
