ESPN as most of you know is releasing their position rankings for each position in the SEC. QB, RB, WR/TE, OL and DL so far. I wanted to tabulate it out see how it is ranked at the end.

Here is how I am doing it.

First I am giving 14 points for 1st place down to 1 point for last point in their rankings. Then I am multiplying the points by 2 for QB and 1.5 of OL and DL.

I think everyone can agree those are the three most important positions in the SEC. I think RB, WR, LB and DB are all pretty equal and just left those with no extra weight.

Secondly I am doing a raknking that gives the QB position x1.5 and both OL and DL x2 for our line friendly fans.

SO FAR with ESPN giving QB, RB, WR/TE, OL, DL and LB rankings only the list looks like this with point totals. DB and ST still to come, maybe they'll even do coaching as well and if so I'll probably give that a double weight like QB.

QB Emphasized Formula total points
1 - Tennessee - 84
1 - Auburn - 84
3 - Alabama - 77
4 - Georgia - 74.5
5 - Missouri- 71.5
6 - Miss St - 70
7 - LSU - 68.5
8 - Arkansas - 63.5
9 - Texas A&M - 63
10 - Ole Miss - 48
11 - Florida - 47
12 - South Carolina - 39
13 - Kentucky - 34
14 - Vandy - 16

OL/DL Emphasized Formula total points
1 - Auburn - 89.5
2 - Alabama - 86.5
3 - Tennessee - 85.5
4 - Georgia - 85
5 - LSU- 75.5
6 - Missouri - 70
7 - Miss St - 68
7 - Arkansas - 68
9 - Texas A&M - 65
10 - Ole Miss - 55.5
11 - Florida - 51
12 - South Carolina - 45
13 - Kentucky - 31.5
14 - Vandy - 16.5

So that is what it looks like so far with DB, ST and maybe coaching to come.

I will update the OP as the new rankings come out and bump this thread.

I think a TN fan has posted one of these ESPN position rankings threads every day this week.

These 2 have to be worth at least 20 points.

You double weighted QB? If you do that, I feel like you should double weight OL as well because it doesn't really matter if your QB doesn't have time to throw, or your RB space to run.

Because it isn't complete yet. I don't expect TN to stay #1 as I think we'll be rather low in LB rankings and middle of the pack for DB's and Special Teams.

IF they do Coaching I would expect us to be middle of the pack to lower end as well.

So it is far from over, what else is there to talk about right now?

I truly find this stuff interesting.

Games are won in the trenches. Double points for QB? Skewing much?

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

I struggled with that, but a great QB can make a bad OL look average and so can an elite RB.

For example TN's OL gave up 32 sacks I belive in the first 8 games of the season when Worley was QB. Then the last 5 only gave up 8ish once Dobbs came in.

So I do think QB is fairly weighted the most.

OL and DL def should be higher than the other positions.

Is that logic good with you?

If I continue to get this feedback I may switch the formula to double points for OL and DL and 1.5 for QB if that many people think my logic is off.

You can win big in college football with average QB play and a dominant offensive line. The same can be said for average secondary and LB play, with a great defensive line. Line play means more IMO.

K I will give OL and DL double and QB half a point extra and see what it spits out.

How about you just give equal weight to all positions and not put your spin on ESPN's rankings?
