Actually, there are theologians who argue that Satan may actually be good but over time he was mistakenly painted in a bad light.

I'll take number two.

That's a stunted view of the comparison.

As usual, your inability to even consider another viewpoint makes it difficult to mistake your thought for objective criticism of faith.

In this scenario, is there a different all powerful God we don't know about? Or is God still the most powerful cat in the room, but he's just a dick? If it's the latter, wouldn't you say we should still stick to what he wants since he's the alpha?

The god of Abraham is seen as a lower level being that is ego driven, needs to trick people into worship. It's actually very opposite of alpha.

Can you give an example of a god who does not "trick" people into worship using the same comparison as YHVH?

The cultures surrounding Israel and the Roman mystery religions in the time of Christ would not have viewed the god of Abraham as a trickster god. So I'm curious what your comparison is.

So your preferred god there is the one that brought the suffering on Job.

or this.

1 Kings 22:20-23New International Version (NIV)

20 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’

“One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’

22 “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.

“‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.

“‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’

23 “So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”

Which is a bit different as he is not deceiving his own believers as sleepy's example claimed.

And in context, it is a story of the provision of God for a much smaller army and its victory over a larger army.

This will fit it better,

Ezekiel 14:9-11New International Version (NIV)

9 “‘And if the prophet is enticed to utter a prophecy, I the Lord have enticed that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel. 10 They will bear their guilt—the prophet will be as guilty as the one who consults him. 11 Then the people of Israel will no longer stray from me, nor will they defile themselves anymore with all their sins. They will be my people, and I will be their God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

the gnostic mythos has essentially the same foundations of Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian and so forth mythologies, (you could include Christian/Hebrew if you like), all exist to explain what early man could not understand.

Ever heard of Gnosticism before now?

Oh gee, maybe!

As an Agnostic(look it up) I recognize that your "trickster, dark forces" are a load of crap, which is what most religion boils down to.

Sleepy, don't confuse the demiurgos or half-creator for God. Really, that's the first lesson of gnosticism. Confusing the two is an error of the sarkikos.

ETA: Damn board format won't let me use greek or hebrew. How the frick am I supposed to say what I mean if I have to fricking transliterate??!!
