There is an ancient practice known as Gnosticism.

Very little is truly known about it, most of what we do know comes to us from its enemies.

Much of the Gnostic texts were destroyed over the centuries, leaving us little to help comprehend the ideology.

Some texts have recently been recovered, although nothing overwhelmingly comprehendible.

A basic tenant of Gnosticism is that the God of Abraham, which is the God of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism is actually a dark force, an ego driven demon type of being who has tricked humanity into worshiping his essence, tricking humans into mass murder and indefinite war against each other in the name of religion.

Thoughts?

Ever heard of Gnosticism before now?

Sure. Read Elaine Pagels' "The Gnostic Gospels" and The Book of Thomas.

Gnostic proverb from Jesus:
"If you summon what is within, what you summon will save you, If you do not summon what is within you, it will destroy you."

Take a tab of acid and write a short paper on this proverb. Due at start of class next Thursday.

Approaches matters like this in a mystical, Zen like manner. Some of the writing, such as the quote I shared from the Book of Thomas, almost read like Zen koans. I believe it was the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) that largely discredited the Gnostic writings and kept them out of the Bible. One of these was the Book of Thomas.

Our MAGMA,
Who art in Ground Zero
Hallowed be thy name
Thy MAGMA come
Thy will be done
In Manhattan as it is in St. Helens

Give MAGMA this day
Her daily thread
And forgive Sleepy's doubters
As he forgives those who trespass against Magma.

And lead the unfaithful
into damnation
and deliver them
to evil.

For MAGMA is the knowledge, the power, and the rustle forever.

Amen.

It's not saying that there is no god, it's saying the entity that's worshiped by the three main religions is not a god, instead a demon.

There is a recognition of the contrast between good and evil, the belief is that there are good and bad spirits or gods or god.

Believing that Abrahams god is actually a demon doesn't mean that there is no god.

Been 'hearing' of it for 20 + years. But then I've read a thing or two. A high school kid in Texas about 10 years back won the state championship in essay writing with one titled "Is Gnosticism The True Christianity"?

I see that you've heard of it, since it's in your name.

It's as weak as is Judaism, Islam, or [other forms of] Christianity. It's as weak as Buddhism, Taoism, Navajoism, Lakota Siouxism, Dakota Siouxism, and/or any other -ism. If this "God" of the Jews (ergo the Christians and Muslims) isn't the true GOD then it isn't the true GOD. Why does it have to be even a demon? Why couldn't it just be the manifestation of the bullshite wonderings of ancient Jews who created their mythology systematically over myriad generations around fires before they created a written language? Why would it have to be anything more (or less) than this?

Latching onto a belief like that you describe seems to me to represent a few things re your current identity: 1) You reject the Judeo-Christian God. OK. Cool. Me, too. 2) You're yet able to completely reject said "God". He can't be just mere bullshite. He has to be a demon. This would suggest a weakness in your own personal confidence.

But I could be wrong.

The belief that Abrahams god is demonic, or a low level dark being is founded by the actions of its followers -- thousands of years of mass murder (see Moses for starters).

I think the belief is that this being is ego driven, wanting to be worshiped, and a trickster. It's a fact that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam worship the same god, and they're all fighting with each other and its followers have been driven to commit murder in the name 'god'.

Those reasons would be a starting point for explaining why the god of Abe is believed to be bad, not good.

I'm generally against latching onto isms, gnosticism is no different. My screen name is simply a screen name.

Part 2 of what you said doesn't make any sense to me. I think we're probably a little bit separated in what we're seeing here.
