Why Oklahoma isn't southern, but actually a Western state.

Oklahoma is a western state. Go 3 hours east of here towards Tennessee, you'll see roughly the same type of landscape as here, oak hickory forest, trees, rivers, towns named after places back east.

Travel a little over three hours west of NWA, you start seeing shite like this:

Little Sahara sand dunes state park

And this.

Great Salt Plains park

And this.

Most of Missouri is more like the south than Oklahoma.

The US government considers Oklahoma part of the south. They could definitely be considered morons though

I don't take "midwestern" as an insult, I just think its inaccurate.

Probably accurate, but only thanks to the Southeast quadrant of our state. The Southwest quadrant is literally the same as Oklahoma.

I have several friends here at Mizzou who come from Southeastern Missouri.....I can hardly understand their accent at times and they regularly refer to me as a Yankee

Most people don't realize that Southeast Missouri is only a 1 hour drive from Mississippi.

Southwest Missouri is similar to Arkansas. And everything east of Tulsa is similar to Arkansas. But that's a small part of Oklahoma. OKC is definitely a western metro in my mind. OKC having more in common with ABQ than Memphis, for example. Tulsa is only marginally "not western" and it still is, really.

SE Kansas is not terribly far away from us either, but the accents of the people, the landscape, its all different from Northwest Arkansas. We are the end of the Southeast demographically (relative lack of Indians) and topographically (hills, trees, relative humidity), as well as culturally.

I'll trust your judgement on this over mine. I've only spent a little bit of time in Southwest Missouri and barely any in Arkansas.

I will say that I have family in Southwest Missouri and they definitely have a noticeable southern accent compared to the way we speak in KC.

I'd agree with this from my experiences. I've never been to Tulsa or Eastern Oklahoma but I've been to OKC and it definitely didn't feel "Southern" to me. In fact, it felt very similar to KC in terms of culture and the way we speak.

You're in the Air Force, correct? So you probably never spent much time east of I-35.

Eastern Oklahoma is VERY much southern, which many residents will gladly tell you.

It's more of a great plains state than western state, but it's the first thing east to what I consider the western U.S.

I love that the "Midwestern" label is considered an insult on here.

Given the choice of being labeled either Midwestern or southern, I'd easily go with Midwestern...it is by far the least embarrassing of the two options
