I remember hearing this rumor years ago, but I just thought it was "hurt feelings" talk, after Gray switched his commitment to notre dame. Turns out...it was true, Rice did really say that to Gray at the party.

Now years later, Munnerlyn is making bank in the Pro's and I don't know where Gray is....

I hadn't heard that story before. Pretty hilarious and prophetic by Rice

Well ... it always made sense knowing Sidney. You had to know Sidney, especially back then. I'm not sure if Ko Simpson was still here when that went-down but I believe either he was still here or he was back visiting when that happened because I think it was Ko that actually ran Gray off over the course of that weekend.

I remember Stockstill telling me that story and we were both laughing about it wondering if it was lockeroom talk or if it really happened because Stock told me that both Sidney and Ko laid into Gray ... matter of fact, I seem to remember all of that going-down right about the time Stock was getting ready to leave for MTS. Was he coaching the DBs at that time? I think he was. I can't remember. I do remember seeing Gray over there several times, he made quite a few unofficial visits and he just never fit-in with the other guys. He was sort of haughty.

He was a heckuvan athlete though.

Went to high school with Gary, and had quite a few classes with him. Remember him and Mark Barnes talking about something along these lines in the lockerroom getting ready for baseball practice.

What are your thoughts on Sidney Rice and why hasn't he shown SC as much love as others? I met Ko briefly after a Bills game and he seemed like a cool dude.

Sydney gonna Sydney.

He's going to eventually come-around.

He's still mad at coach about some things - but he shouldn't be. Coach helped-him-out tremendously and had Stock still been here he would have run Sidney off.

Sidney is just strange. But he is coming-around. He likes it up in the pacific northwest.

Stock=Stockstill?

I thought he was a good receivers coach, a steal IMO.

But I was kind of young (18ish) when he was here so I don't know much about him.

Great WR coach and great guy in general.

Sidney was an entitled little shite, especially during the recruiting process. He wanted to go to Florida - even hid-out down there playing AAU basketball hoping to get them to offer him for football while letting him play both sports. Skip made him a "must get" while most of us thought we should stay away from him.

Mike had problems with him at Gaffney, he was un-coachable, wouldn't follow the rules, refused to give-up his phone before a game one night so he was suspended. He had a couple of illegitimate kids while he was still in high school. His grades were always iffy - very borderline.

Guge was recruiting him then Guge was let-go over some bullshite that Skip manufactured in order to take some pressure off of himself. Then Stock took over the recruitment and Stock wasn't crazy about Sidney ... but Skip mandated we sign Sidney because, and I quote, "He's got a 45" vertical with great hands I don't give a shite about anything else."

frick Skippy.

So they eventually signed him after Florida didn't want him and Clemson was out of schollies .... you gotta remember, Sidney was a Clemson fan by birth, he was born in Liberty or Pickens if I remember correctly and had always been a Clemson fan but Bowden thought he'd be a problem child with all of his character issues. UNC had already shied away from him as well. NC State was still after him, and Va Tech, but that was about it other than us and we won-out in the end by default.

So he gets here and immediately he was a problem. So he redshirted. Stock had a major problem with him on and off the field.

Then Skip and Lou leave and Spurrier comes-in. Stock was a holdover and Stock basically gave the HBC the scoop on Sidney after they all got back from Christmas break. Bottom line was, "good talent, huge upside, bad attitude."

Spurrier and Bubba played good-cop/bad-cop with the HBC being bad and Bubba being good and they basically gave him an ultimatum. They cited all the NFL WRs they had coached at Florida and Oklahoma and told Sydney if he did exactly what he was told he too could go to the NFL ... but if he screwed-up just one time they would kick him off the team. There would be no second chances.

Stock was moved to mainly TEs at that time, Bubba took-over the WRs and that was fine with Stock ... but Sidney worked hard for Bubba under the threat of being gone ... and the rest his history.

Sidney deciding to leave early and Sidney leaving with some parting shots letting his old shitty attitude get the best of him so, in the end, Sidney illustrated that he still had a lot of growing-up to do .... and nothing illustrated it more than his rookie season at Minnesota and him getting into a shitload of trouble up there with some strippers or something. I forget the whole story but it was a major major deal.

And he continued to have some character issues although, the last couple of times he was was in Gaffney you could tell he had matured some.

Here's the deal with Sidney IMHO.

Sidney is running from his past upbringing - he knows he's made some mistakes. He's actually a very intelligent person. He's all about starting new these days. He's a businessman now and he has businesses - he sees himself as a restaurant tycoon in the future. But he's still a bit immature and he still thinks everyone should pay tribute to him just like he has since he was in the 8th grade.

So, there we go. Sidney gonna Sidney. He clashes with everyone eventually.

Thanks for info. Sidney was one of my favorite players ever but didn't know that side of it. Good to know though.

I knew Sidney back when I was at USC. He dated a girl from my hometown and would come watch some of our co-ed intramural basketball games, because she played on our team. He would make small talk with us and things like that, but he did always seem a little odd. He did sign a helmet for me though and got some other guys to sign it, as well like McKinley, Jared Cook, and the legend Blake Mitchell himself.

He owns several Wing Zone franchises up in the Seattle area, so I doubt he will be around too much. Loved watching that dude play football though... so damn smooth.
