4-star LB Roquan Smith says he'll announce on Friday where he is committing, will sign scholarship papers but no NLI.

Which means he can still go wherever he wants...

But, IIRC, signing financial papers frees up that particular school to speak with him rule-free. So, those particular coaches can call and text and all that.

I think so... Other schools have to follow NCAA contact rules, we are unlimited in contact... Great point...

I've kind of chalked him up as not being a part of this class, but after this interview, my gut feeling is UGA.

LINK

And I've already accepted that he won't sign with us so if he chooses us on Friday it'll just make it that much sweeter. Best of luck to the kid though.
quote:

UGASports.com: The news came out about UCLA later on in the day last Wednesday. Obviously, now, Coach Jeff Ulbricht has made his move to the Atlanta Falcons. How does that shape things? Coach Harold mentioned in the AJC that he was not very happy with how they handled that situation, but how do you feel about how they handled it?"

Smith: "Otherwise, it's a great school and all of this and that, but Coach Ulbricht did say that Coach Dan Quinn (of the Atlanta Falcons) had called him the night before, but he had declined the job offer. I felt like Coach (Jim) Mora should have hit me up and said there's potential that Coach Ulbricht may be leaving. Then, they tried to get me to go ahead and send the papers in, but I wasn't doing it. They tried to get me to send them in at 8 in the morning. Doing a lot of research, which I should have done earlier in the process and thank goodness I had more time, they don't even have my major. I was going to major in business, and the only way to get into business school out there is to be in graduate school."

UGASports.com: I assume that the business degree was something you expressed to them at some point. You probably said 'That's what I want to major in', right?

Smith: "I did."

UGASports.com: And they didn't say you can't do that here?

Smith: "No, they didn't. I guess they were trying to speak as far as the graduate school for business."

UGASports.com: Do you feel mislead?

Smith: "I kind of do. For them to be my first offer, yeah. I thought they were keeping it real with me, but you know people are going to lie."

UGASports.com: Do you regret doing it on TV?

Smith: "I kind of don't regret it. In a way, it actually helped me see who were my true supporters. I did it for UCLA on TV, then I saw people who I thought were true to me and behind me 100-percent regardless change up some. In a way, I'm kind of happy I seen that. Wherever I go now, I'll know who I really got behind my back."

^^^ This last answer sounds like a few bridges between him and some UGA fans may have been burned but I may be reading too much into it.

quote:

UGASports.com: Michigan and Texas A&M were the two schools on the outside of all of this last week. Now, they're back in the fold. What have you heard from them? You're close with Coach DJ Durkin and that Michigan staff, and you seemed to enjoy your visit there. What have they said that could benefit them moving into Friday?

Smith: "To be honest with you, I haven't really been talking to schools like that. I talked to Coach Durkin, but I haven't really been talking to schools like that much. It's probably only been once or twice after signing day. They message me, but I haven't been on Twitter very much."

News flash kid. We don't give a shite about you unless you want to play ball for our school.

I think it's UGA. If it went past this week, then I thought he would go else where. This week is good for UGA.

GTFO. He's an 18 year old kid. Best of luck to him wherever he goes. From that article I have a really hard time believing it's UCLA. Knowing the coaches straight up lied to you has to be a backbreaker. We'll see though.

IMO the article spells it out with his answers.

He's UGA bound.

I'm only 4 years older than he is - so what? I absolutely love football and dedicated 5 years of my life to supporting UGA's program as much as I could. A lot of these guys have hyper-inflated senses of self-worth. I get it if he's discovering things about his family - but if he thinks the majority of CFB fans have his back if he isn't interested in their school - he is out of his mind. I wish him no ill will, but you don't get my support simply for being a football player.

Exactly what part of this could possibly be good for UGA other than he didn't actually sign with UCLA?

He said he was leaning UGA til the very moment he announced. UCLA wanted his LOI at 8:00 which is the middle of the night in California- assume due to the coaching change. Then he learned they didn't have his major.

Did he pull the trigger for the good guys?? Nope, presumably because a coach who isn't even at UGA didn't recruit him early enough. Well eliminate Louisville Roquan.

We need to take the hint. Roquan just ain't that into us.
